Help Yourself<\/strong> transpired in 1969 as backup for Malcolm Morley<\/strong>, under the management of \u2018Famepushers\u2019. The completed Help Yourself<\/strong> comprised ex Monday Morning Glory Band<\/strong> Richard Treece<\/strong> (guitars\/vox) ex Sam Apple Pie Dave Charles<\/strong> (drums\/vox), ex Growth Ken Whaley<\/strong> (bass) & ex Sam Apple Pie Malcolm Morley<\/strong> (guitars\/keyboards\/vox). Help Yourself<\/strong> recorded their self titled 1971 debut completely written by Morley<\/strong> exuding the intrinsic \u201cTo Katherine They Fell\u201d, magnificently lavished with artistic time signatures.The CSN <\/strong>folk nexus washed superbly over \u201cOld Man\u201d, while \u201cRunning Down Deep\u201d spills out shimmering twin lead breaks. The highlight was a solace ballad called \u201cDeborah\u201d, right up there with the gifted Lennon & McCartney<\/strong>. Whaley left the band after the debut, replaced by ex Eire Apparent Ernie Graham <\/strong>(guitars) who started out in the early sixties with Tony & the Telstars<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Help Yourself<\/strong> was actually experiencing financial difficulties thus teaming up with Brinsley Schwarz<\/strong> who had just cashed in on \u201d(What\u2019s So Funny Bout) Peace Love And understanding\u201d. They all moved into a rented house in Headley called the \u2018Grange\u2019, where Zeppelin<\/strong> had recorded SOZO.<\/em> It was here that that The Helps<\/strong> recorded Strange Affair<\/em>, now including Jonathan (Jojo) Glemser<\/strong> who left with Ernie to form Clancy<\/strong> alongside Colin Bass<\/strong>, ex Brinsley Schwarz Ian Gomm<\/strong> and ex Twice As Much \/ Uncle Dog <\/strong>keyboardist David Skinner<\/strong>. They were replaced by former Sam Apple Pie<\/strong> roadie Paul Burton<\/strong>. The Affair<\/em> was orgasmic with chiming Gibsons that trembled through \u201cBrown Lady\u201d. Treece & Morley<\/strong> came to the fore on the lyrically rich \u201cMovie Star\u201d while gems like \u201cDeanna Call\u00a0 And Scotty\u201d fell straight out of the trough of Irish heritage. The wah wah Gibson stirs daringly on \u201cHeaven Row\u201d reaching maximus on \u201cExcerpts From The All Electric Fur Trapper\u201d. The lineup of Burton, Morley, Treece & Charles<\/strong> now recorded the colorful Beware of the Shadow<\/em> which conceived their opus \u201cReaffirmation\u201d, a track that became a live platform for blowing.<\/p>\n

After the Shadow <\/em>Whaley <\/strong>formed Ducks Deluxe<\/strong>.The Shadow<\/em> leaned toward folk rock in the realm of Gypsy<\/strong>, confirmed by wooden excursions \u201cShe\u2019s My Girl\u201d,\u201cPassing Through\u201d \u201cCalapso\u201d and riffing \u201cAmerican Mother\u201d. Whaley <\/strong>returned for The Return of Ken Whaley<\/em>, released in sync with the bonus Happy Days. (live tour with Flying Aces).<\/strong> The return paid dividend on \u201cPioneers Of The West In The Head\u201d, a Gibson homage to Hank B. Marvin<\/strong>. The self help magic was very evident in \u201cAmy\u201d, the Gibson wah wah \u201cBlown Away\u201d, spirit filled \u201cIt Has To Be\u201d and dimensional time signatures of \u201cThe Golden Handshake\u201d.Happy Days<\/em> was a surreal affair, almost Bonzo Dog<\/strong>, but drips solidly through the folky \u201cVirginia\u201d and psychedelic \u201cSeashell\u201d. Morley & Whaley<\/strong> joined Man<\/strong> while remaining members joined Deke Leonard’s<\/strong> Iceberg<\/strong>, a guitarist that reach impeccable heights on \u201cOut Of My Tree\u201d. Treece <\/strong>later joined the Flying Aces.<\/strong><\/p>\n
