The first crawl of Giant Crab<\/strong>\u00a0was kickstarted by\u00a0ex Emperors<\/strong> guitarist Ernie Oroscoe<\/strong>. Ernie & the Emperors<\/strong> debut bill was opening for\u00a0the Isley Brothers<\/strong> at \u2018Earl Warren Showgrounds\u2019. The ‘Peppermint twist’ era gave way to acid days with Ernie and his brothers Raymond & Ruben forming Giant Crab<\/strong> with the brothers Fricia<\/strong>. The Crab<\/strong>\u2019s final claws comprised Ernie Orosco (vox-guitar), Raymond Orosco (guitar-bass-clavinet), Ruben Orosco (bass-drums-sax), Dennis Fricia (drums-horns,) & Kenny Fricia (keyboards) The group was produced by Strawberry Alarm Clock\u2019s<\/strong> producer Bill Holmes. After putting out “Listen Girl”\/”Summer Breezes”, “Day By Day (It Happens)”\/ “Kind of Funny” and “It Started with a Little Kiss”, Giant Crab<\/strong> launched their 1968 conceptual A Giant Crab Comes Forth<\/em> clambering with soulful psychedelic brass in the same shade as Douglas Fir<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The album was mostly original other than a cover of Scott English\u2019<\/strong> \u201cHi Ho Silver Lining\u201d and Joey Levine’s<\/strong> “I Enjoy Being a Boy” first recorded by Banana Splits<\/strong> (renowned Fleagle, Bingo, Drooper & Snorky, famous for TV show – theme “The Banana Splits Song\u201d) Giant Crab\u2019s<\/strong> opus was a brassy version of Dunn & McCashen\u2019s<\/strong> \u201cLydia Purple\u201d previously covered by The Collectors<\/strong> and later Cargo<\/strong>. The highlights are the Rascals<\/strong> sounding \u201cIt Started With A Little Kiss\u201d and surging Grassroots<\/strong> influenced \u201cIntensify Your Soul\u201d and \u201cThru The Fields\u201d. The fuzz ripping \u201cHot Line Conversation\u201d is freakbeat finesse. The group then recorded the conceptual Cool It Helios<\/em> boosted by the horn powered “Help Yourself”, “Hello Yesterday” and “Welcome To the World”. After the Pretty Things<\/strong> steal \u201cE.S.P\u201d, Oroscoe\u00a0 formed Big Brother.<\/strong><\/p>\n
