{"id":2016,"date":"2017-02-03T22:25:12","date_gmt":"2017-02-03T22:25:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hippy.com\/hip\/other\/sons-of-adam\/"},"modified":"2017-02-03T22:25:12","modified_gmt":"2017-02-03T22:25:12","slug":"sons-of-adam-by-shiloh-noone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hipplanet.com\/hip\/reviews\/sons-of-adam-by-shiloh-noone\/","title":{"rendered":"Sons Of Adam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"justify\">The <strong>Sons of Adam<\/strong> were an underrated freakbeat group from California headed by a blistering guitarist called <strong>Randy Holden<\/strong>. <strong>Randy Holden\u2019s<\/strong> roots started with the Surfguitar band <strong>Fender IV<\/strong> comprising Randy on lead , <strong>Joe Kooken<\/strong> rhythm , <strong>Mike Port<\/strong> bass &amp; drums <strong>Bruce Miller<\/strong> that put out the <strong>Dick Dale<\/strong> styled \u201cMar Gaya&#8221;\/&#8221;You Better Tell Me Now&#8221; (1964 Imperial Records) &#8220;Malibu Run&#8221;\/&#8221;Everybody Up&#8221; (1965 Imperial Records) <strong>Sons Of Adam<\/strong> operated in the\u00a0 Baltimore area in 1962, later moving to Southern California. The <strong>Sons of Adam<\/strong> name was given to them by the visionary and misunderstood <strong>Kim Fowley<\/strong>, renowned for his hit song \u201cAlley Oop\u201d. <strong>Sons of Adam<\/strong> were prime Brit Invasion with a riveting Californian psyche sound that made them collectably and exclusive.<\/p>\n<p>Surf Guitar eventually becomes doused in new sounds but Randy was an old hat with his legendary inventive reverbed fretting. The members of <strong>Sons Of Adam<\/strong> initially <strong>Randy Holden<\/strong> guitar, vocals <strong>Joe Kooken<\/strong> guitar <strong>Mike Port<\/strong> bass, <strong>Jack Ttana<\/strong> rhythm guitar &amp; <strong>Michael Stuart<\/strong> drums. The group put out an astounding cover of the <strong>Mike Hugg&#8217;s<\/strong> <strong>Yardbird<\/strong> classic &#8220;Mr You&#8217;re a Better Man Than I&#8221; \/ &#8220;You Better Tell Me Now&#8221; for\u00a0 Decca Records in 1965 &#8211; produced by <strong>Gary Usher<\/strong>. Sons of Adam opened for the <strong>Rolling Stones<\/strong> at their first show at the Long Beach \u2018Sports Arena\u2019. <strong>Randy Holden<\/strong> is renowned for his characteristic <strong>Jeff Beck<\/strong>-like sustain which can\u00a0 be heard on <strong>The Other Half\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0 &#8220;Feathered Fish,&#8221;, penned by <strong>Arthur Lee<\/strong> of <strong>Love<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>When the <strong>Sons of Adam<\/strong> broke up, drummer <strong>Michael Stuart<\/strong> joined <strong>Love<\/strong>, while Holden joined the San Francisco psychedelic band, <strong>The Other Half<\/strong> where his shimmering breaks and suspended leads are the highlights of their sole album. Randy would then enter the power trio <strong>Blue Cheer<\/strong> stamping his \u2018Guitar God\u2019 status with overpowering intensity, nobody disagreed? <strong>Sons Of Adam<\/strong> should have happened with their dynamic \u201cTake My Hand\u201d, reeling with superb harmonies and Surf chiming guitars, a.ka. <strong>Monkees.<\/strong> Their sound with similarities to the <strong>Grassroots<\/strong> was in a class of its own like their rendition of <strong>Lou Josie\u2019s<\/strong> \u201cSaturday\u2019s Son\u201d, the same cat who wrote \u201cMidnight Confessions\u201d, ironically that the <strong>Grassroots <\/strong>charted with. Uncharacteristically \u201cSons Of Adam\u2019s most prolific songs were more melodic like the beautiful \u201cWithout Love\u201d , a nugget still to be discovered or even more insular \u201cI Told You Once Before\u201d, a song for returning Vietnam vets trying to prove their love again.
