The idea of forming <strong>Band Of Joy<\/strong> was to play at live venues , the first formation being ex <strong>Tennessee Teens<\/strong> \/ <strong>Listen<\/strong> <strong>Bob Plant<\/strong> lead vox, ex <strong>Shooting Stars<\/strong> drummer Pete Robinson, Chris Brown keyboards, ex <strong>Stringbeats<\/strong> guitarist Vernon Pereira\u00a0 &amp;\u00a0 bassist Lyndon Laney, replaced by Mick Reeves. The first moment of <strong>Joy <\/strong>broke in March 1967 when <strong>Bob Plant<\/strong> was asked to leave, so he did some blues harmonica \/ vox sessions with <strong>Alexis Korner<\/strong> jumping through <strong>Black Snake Moan<\/strong> and <strong>Crawling Kingsnakes<\/strong>.(These sessions yielded his first single &#8216;Our Song&#8217;\/ &#8216;Laughin&#8217;, Cryin&#8217;, Laughin&#8217;\u00a0 in March 1967, with backing singers <strong>Madeline Bell &amp; Kiki Dee<\/strong>) He was replaced by ex <strong>Paint <\/strong>vocalist \/guitarist Mickey Cox.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Band Of Joy\u2019s<\/strong> first debut performances were featured at \u2018Churchfields Comp school\u2019 but actualized at the \u2018Black Horse\u2019 and \u2018Chateau Impney\u2019. (NB Band Of Joy had many entrants not recorded in this write up purely for lack of info) Once <strong>Plant<\/strong> left <strong>Band Of Joy<\/strong> a second phase toured the live venues now including ex <strong>Shooting Stars<\/strong> Paul Lockey &amp; ex <strong>Paint<\/strong> Micky Cox who later joined Jardine with Keith Law. The completed third line-up Plant, Vernon Periera, Chris Brown, Pete Robinson from first <strong>BoJ<\/strong> entered a 2 week tour of Scotland. By 1967 a third phase of Band Of Joy comprised of the Wolverhamton band <strong>Paper<\/strong> which included Steve Bowen, Steve Taylor, John Elston, John Mathews and a returned Bob Plant. (Guitarist Kevyn Gammond stood in adhoc with ex <strong>Uncle Joseph<\/strong> bassist John Hill) This lineup was fondly remembered as <strong>Robert Plant and the Band of Joy<\/strong> that included a psychedelic light show. The band adopted full face paint with hippy regalia kaftans, beads on stage, performing at the \u2018Ship &amp; Rainbow\u2019 covering <strong>William Roberts\u2019<\/strong> \u201cHey Joe\u201d , <strong>Moby Grape<\/strong> and <strong>Love <\/strong>repertoire.<\/p>\n<p>Also a short stint with the band was ex <strong>Uglys <\/strong>\/ <strong>Ian Campbell Folk Group<\/strong> guitarist <strong>Dave Pegg<\/strong> who was persuaded to swap to bass and has played the instrument ever since, but he did not tour but rather opted for <strong>Fairport Convention<\/strong>, later to ignite <strong>Jethro Tull<\/strong>). This line-up supported <strong>The Geno Washington Band<\/strong> in Wolverhamton and cleaned up. (notably band&#8217;s roadie was <strong>Noddy Holder<\/strong> later of <strong>Slade<\/strong>) Standard live repertoire included <strong>Billy Roberts\u2019<\/strong> \u201cHey Joe\u201d, <strong>Buffalo Springfield\u2019s<\/strong> \u201cFor What it Worth\u201d and <strong>Tim Hardin\u2019s<\/strong> \u201cIf I Were A Carpenter\u201d and &#8220;Hang On to A\u00a0 Dream\u201d and <strong>Jefferson\u00a0 Airplane\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cShe Has Funny Cars\u201d and \u201cPlastic Fantastic Lover\u201d\u00a0 Some of these were included in Plant\u2019s retrospective 2003 album <em>Sixty Six to Timbuktu.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In Oct 67 the <strong>Band of Joy 2<\/strong> had to change its name to <strong>The Good Egg,<\/strong> but reformed in 1968 as <strong>Band of Joy<\/strong> to cover remaining gigs on the books, his line up was\u00a0 Bob, John, John Hill, Mick Strode, ex <strong>Big Three\/ Journeymen<\/strong> Tim Rose and ex <strong>Senators \/ Pat Wayne &amp; The Beachcombers\/ The Way of Life<\/strong> <strong>John Bonham<\/strong> fresh out of <strong>Crawling King Snakes<\/strong>. The last <strong>Band of Joy<\/strong> gigs were played in Sunderland and Newcastle upon Tyne in\u00a0 68 with members of the second <strong>Band of Joy<\/strong>. Band of Joy co-founder Vernon Pereira formed the hard rock band <strong>Possessed<\/strong> while Plant went to <strong>Obbstweedle<\/strong>\u00a0 where he was abducted by some ex <strong>Yardbirds<\/strong> for <strong>Led Zeppelin<\/strong>. In 1977 Gammond &amp; Lockey revived <strong>Band of Joy<\/strong> with John Pasternak, Peter Robinson &amp; keyboardist Michael Chetwood, Gammond, Lockey, Pasternak &amp; Robinson, all\u00a0 previous Bronco.
