Some of them, more radical, were disgusted with the slow pace<br \/>\nof reform, and felt the need to speed things up and force the issue directly.<br \/>\nAmong these outspoken black people was Malcolm X, a black muslim who demanded<br \/>\nnot just equality, but advocated a black revolution as a response to the<br \/>\noppression and inequality black people experienced. Malcolm X looked at<br \/>\nthe history of black people in America and pointed out how they were still<br \/>\nsuffering from slave mentality on the part of both the white establishment,<br \/>\nand their own thinking.<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Say it loud, I&#8217;m Black and I&#8217;m proud<br \/>\n&#8211; James Brown<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Around this time, black students on college campuses were demanding classes<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> that focused on black history and minority studies, rather than the standard<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> white version of history. Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> chairman, Stokely Charmichael, used the term Black Power to create an awareness<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> among blacks of their human rights and ability to change their own circumstances<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> without reliance on the white power structure for improving the lot of black<\/span><br \/>\npeople<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ede5da;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hippy.com\/archives\/cleaver-carmichael.jpg\" alt=\"width=150\" height=\"221\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ede5da;\"> <b>Eldridge Cleaver &amp; Stokely Carmichael<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><b><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The struggle of our people for freedom has progressed to the form where all of us must take a stand either for or against the freedom of our people You are either with Your People or against them. You are either part of the solutionor part of the problem.<br \/>\n&#8211; Eldridge Cleaver<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Eldridge Cleaver&#8217;s landmark bestselling book, Soul on Ice, broke new literary<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> ground by airing Black people&#8217;s grievances against white society, and pointing<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> out that black anger was rooted in hundreds of years of psychological oppression<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> by whites. Cleaver went on to become the Minister of Information for the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> Black Panther Party.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ede5da;\"><b> Black is beautiful <\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ede5da;\"><b><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hippy.com\/archives\/blackpower.jpg\" alt=\"Black\" width=\"200\" height=\"253\" \/><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">American Athletes give Black Power salute at Olympics<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><b><span style=\"font-size: small;\">We have two evils to fight, capitalism and racism. We must destroy both racism and capitalism.<br \/>\n&#8211; Huey P. Newton<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">The Black Panther Party was founded by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale and<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> embraced the teachings of Malcolm X. The Black Panthers set out to change<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> the way black people were being treated in America. First they wanted to<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> protect blacks from police harrassment and brutality. To this end, they advocated<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> arming black people with weapons and using them when necessary to defend<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> oneself. When you realize that most of the leaders of the Black Panthers<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> were former US military men, many of whom served in Vietnam, you know they<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> weren&#8217;t bluffing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ede5da;\"><b><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hippy.com\/archives\/panthers.jpg\" alt=\"width=180\" height=\"258\" \/><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Panthers<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>No matter how much money you make in the black community, when you go into the white world you are still a nigger, you are still a nigger, you are still a nigger.<br \/>\n&#8211; Stokely Carmichael<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">The second thing the Panthers wanted to achieve was economic and political<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> equality for black people. To achieve this they felt it necessary to reject<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> the existing system and set about creating an independent self-supporting<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> political and economic system. Black Panthers setup many new community<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> services including feeding the poor, teaching young children black history<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> and black pride and free medical services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ede5da;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hippy.com\/archives\/panthersatcapitol.jpg\" alt=\"width=330\" height=\"256\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ede5da;\"> <b>Black Panthers at Capitol<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><b><span style=\"font-size: small;\">We have dedicated our lives, our blood, to the freedom and liberation of our people, and nothing, no force can stop us from achieving our goal. If it is necessary to destroy the United States of America, then let us destroy it with a smile on our faces.<br \/>\n&#8211; Eldridge Cleaver<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">But most significantly, the Black Panthers preached revolution, and if<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> an armed struggle was needed, they were ready. The Panthers were perhaps<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> the most credible threat to the existing American society in that they were<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> well organized, highly motivated, very well armed and trained. And given<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> the state of civil rights in the country in the late 60s, the time was right.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">A Wall Street Journal sampling of opinion among black citizens in four metropolitan areas across the nation (SF, NY, Cleveland and Chicago) indicates a clear majority of blacks strongly support both the goals and methods of the Black Panthers.<br \/>\n&#8211; Wall St. Journal<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">But their leaders became targets for the police, and a number of busts<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> and shootouts resulted in the Panther leadership either being killed or<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> incarcerated. Yet the Panthers managed to inspire many black people to become<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> more active in their communities and to fight the system.
