So now where are we 40 years after the 60\u2019s? Tired and retired, in a
\nworld of giant corporations that transcend national boundaries, laws,
\nrules and regulations. The good news is this is still a country where you
\ncan fight if you want to.<\/u> You won\u2019t be shot or killed (well, probably not).<\/p>\n
You can organize a demonstration, publish whatever you like, or hire a lawyer and fight
\njust about anything. You might not win, but at least the rules allow
\nyou to fight without much of a chance of getting killed. I\u2019ve
\nlived in a semi-third world country and that experience sobered me up
\nas to how blessed we are to still have some pieces of paper called
\nthe Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United
\nStates, and the Bill of Rights. Because many other countries don\u2019t
\nhave those and could care less about a trifling thing called
\n\u2018rights\u2019, or \u2018freedoms\u2019.<\/p>\n
The \u201cPatriot Act\u201d? My patriot act is the Bill of Rights.<\/p>\n
After living in a country overseas with little rule of law I returned to
\nthe United States firmly committed to never telling another \u2018lawyer
\njoke\u2019. Upon de-planing I first kissed the ground, then the
\nConstitution and then a lawyer. At least in the United States, a
\nlawyer represents the \u2018rule of law\u2019 which is–if you\u2019ve never
\nexperienced its absence–a holy thing. Of course lawyers can be a
\nforce for ill, but they can also be a force for good.<\/p>\n
