Unrest in the Southwest<\/strong><\/p>\n

Things are bubbling out there in the
\nsouthwest area high schools. Here’s a brief, and admittedly
\nincomplete rundown on a few incidents which occurred during he last
\ntwo weeks.<\/p>\n

At Bellaire a student council sponsored
\nreferendum was presented to the student body on hair and dress
\nregulations. The question was, who should have the right to make
\nthose decisions: the administration, the student council, or the
\nindividual? The result of the referendum (representing only about
\ntwo-thirds of the enrollment since some teachers refused to hand out
\nthe ballots) was as fallows: 1,520 for the individual, 750 for the
\nstudent council, 450 for the administration. In response, Bellaire
\nPrincipal Harlan Andrews declared the referendum null and void,
\n,saying that it had not been authorized by him. Only a week before
\nAndrews had been urging students to channel their grievances through
\nthe student council.<\/p>\n

Leafletting has occurred at almost all
\nsouthwest high schools. The most frequent point of dissent is the
\nhair and dress code, but as little ground is gained in this fight the
\nrange of issues invariably broadens. At Spring Woods a test case is
\nbeing prepared to challenge the constitutionality of grooming
\nrestrictions.<\/p>\n

Though there have been numerous
\nexpulsions and suspensions, the only reported arrest took place
\nbefore school in the cafeteria at Madison High School. Madison
\nstudents had requested help from Bellaire in preparing and
\ndistributing leaflets, and on Wednesday of last week two Bellaire
\nstudents, a boy and a girl were busted for leafletting at Madison.
\nThe girl was later released as a juvenile, but the boy, Harrell
\nGraham<\/strong><\/a>, was charged with trespassing and loitering. His trial is set
\nfor 11a.m. October 16 at Corporation Court, 61 Reisner Street.
\nBellaire’s Watermelon Committee is encouraging as many people as
\npossible to attend the trial in a show of support for Harrell.

And at Sharpstown “Phlashlyte,” the
\nindependent newspaper that caused all the uproar last year,
\nreappeared on campus.<\/p>\n

All of which proves, friends, that the
\ntimes indeed are a’changing.<\/p>\n
