The special effects are now<br \/>\nclassics.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p><\/center><\/p>\n<p><b>Acapulco Gold:<\/b> Legendary Mexican marijuana from the 60s.<br \/>\nToday it wouldn&#8217;t be considered so special, but back then it was great!<\/p>\n<p><b>Acid: see<br \/>\n<\/b>LSD.<\/p>\n<p><b>Acid Tests:<\/b> Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters did the first<br \/>\nAcid Tests.  These were events were everyone dropped acid together<br \/>\nfor an extraordinary group experience.  Tom Wolfe wrote The Electric<br \/>\nKool-Aid Acid Test about the experiences of Ken Kesey the Merry Pranksters.<\/p>\n<p><b>Activist:<\/b> A person who participates in protest actions.<br \/>\nAnyone involved in a cause, usually political.<\/p>\n<p><b>Afterglow:<\/b> A state of peace that can follow after a psychedelic<br \/>\nexperience when your mind is still detached from worldly concerns.<br \/>\nHe&#8217;s bathing in the afterglow of his last LSD trip.<\/p>\n<p><b>Agnew, Spiro T.: <\/b>Vice President during Nixon&#8217;s reign, he antagonized<br \/>\nalmost everyone but expecially liberals with his verbal rantings.<br \/>\nHe claimed the antiwar movement was the work of an effete corps of impudent<br \/>\nsnobs. He survived a bribery scandal but was convicted of income tax evasion<br \/>\nhe was forced to resign much to everyone&#8217;s delight.  Recently declassifed<br \/>\nFBI files show Agnew did receive hundreds of thousands of dollars in kickbacks<br \/>\nas Govenor and Vice President.<\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B000003CMC\/hippylandhippiem><img SRC=http:\/\/www.hipmarket.com\/music\/allman.jpg NOSAVE BORDER=0 height=170 width=170 align=LEFT><\/a><b>Allman<br \/>\nBrothers:<\/b> Southern rock Band popular in the early 70s, played the Fillmore.<br \/>\nMidnight Rider, Melissa, Ramblin&#8217; Man some of their hits.<\/p>\n<p><b>Altamont:<\/b> Controversial, ill fated rock concert headlined by<br \/>\nthe Rolling Stones and Jefferson Airplane at Altamont Speedway on Dec.24,<br \/>\n1969.  Hells Angels, acting as security, had their hands full as people<br \/>\nkept rushing the stage. One man pulled a gun, and the Angels killed him.<br \/>\nThe film Gimme Shelter documenting the concert was used in evidence to<br \/>\nclear the Angels.<\/p>\n<p><b>Antiwar Movement: <\/b>The organized resistance by students, veterans<br \/>\nand other activists against the draft and Vietnam War in the 1960s and<br \/>\nearly &#8217;70s. Rallies, marches, speeches, teach-ins, sit-ins, slogans, banners,<br \/>\nand songs were some of the non-violent tactics used to get the message<br \/>\nout.<\/p>\n<p><b>Asanas:<\/b> Sanskrit word. A series of body postures that stretch<br \/>\nand tone muscles, increase endurance, and improve flexibility. Along with<br \/>\nbreathing and meditation they make up the practice of Hatha Yoga.<\/p>\n<p><b>Ashram:<\/b> A monastery where monks practice yoga.<\/p>\n<p><b>Astral Plane:<\/b> A dimension of existence beyond the physical world.<br \/>\nA place where disembodied spirits dwell. Many attempt to contact the astral<br \/>\nplane through meditation or by using psychic energy.<\/p>\n<p><a NAME=B><\/a><b>Babe:<\/b> Affectionate term for female, now with<br \/>\nslightly different meaning.<\/p>\n<p><b>Baby:<\/b> Similar to Babe.<\/p>\n<p><b>Bad Acid: <\/b>Poorly made LSD, probably cut with speed which causes<br \/>\na bad trip.  Some people at Woodstock downed some bad acid and the<br \/>\ncrowd was warned about it, making the term instantly popular.<\/p>\n<p><b>Bad Trip:<\/b> An LSD trip that goes awry.  Usually indicated<br \/>\nby paranoia, or intense, uncontrollable feelings or rarely suicidal urges.<br \/>\nAlso used to describe any bad experience.<\/p>\n<p><b>Baez, Joan: <\/b>Singer, songwriter, antiwar activist, Joan went to<br \/>\njail for her participation in antiwar rallies.<\/p>\n<p><b>Bag:<\/b> What you&#8217;re into.  Your profession\/obsession.<br \/>\nWhat you enjoy.  I hear your bag&#8217;s nude meditation on acid!<\/p>\n<p><b>Ball:<\/b> To have sex. I hear Mountain&#8217;s been balling your old girlfriend<br \/>\nHarmony.<\/p>\n<p><b>Ban the Bomb: <\/b>Slogan calling for the end of nuclear weapons.<br \/>\nThe hippies were a generation raised in fear of THE BOMB. Does anyone NOT know who these<br \/>\nguys are?  That is a testament to how great this band was.  Originally<br \/>\nfrom Liverpool, England the Beatles took America by storm in 1964.<br \/>\nIt was the start of what became known as The British Invasion. They went<br \/>\non to record some of the most popular singles and albums in history.<br \/>\nThere was something about the synergy of their talents and their willingness<br \/>\nto push the music experience in new directions that took us all on a Magical<br \/>\nMystery Tour we can never forget.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p><\/center><\/p>\n<p><b>Beatlemania<\/b>: Used to describe the virtual hysteria that accompanied<br \/>\nthe Beatles on their tours.  Also refers to the successful marketing<br \/>\nof the Beatles, their records and other products.<\/p>\n<p><b>Beatniks: <\/b>Derived from the term beat, beatniks were the precursors<br \/>\nof the hippies.  This tribe included authors Allen Ginsberg, Jack<br \/>\nKerouac, William S. Burroughs and others who believed the essence in life<br \/>\nis to follow your desires and experience all life has to offer.  The<br \/>\nbeat music scene included jazz, folk and the emerging rock music.<br \/>\nBeatniks had hangouts like Greenwich Village in New York when they weren&#8217;t<br \/>\nOn the Road.  Beatniks experimented with unusual living arrangements,<br \/>\ndrugs, and innovative art.  Word attributed to Herb Caen, a San Francisco<br \/>\ncolumnist describing the Beat Generation in 1958.<\/p>\n<p><b>Beautiful People:<\/b> Used to describe hippies or cool persons.<\/p>\n<p><b>Bean bag chair:<\/b> A big amorphous chair covered with Naugahyde<br \/>\nvinyl (or leather or other material)&#8230;usually filled with little styrofoam<br \/>\nballs.  You could sit in it and it would shape itself to you.<br \/>\nThey were very comfortable and relaxing.<\/p>\n<p><font face=Gill Sans><b>Be-In: <\/b>One of the first gatherings of<br \/>\nhippies, January 14, 1967 at the Polo field in Golden Gate Park. It was<br \/>\ncalled A Gathering of the Tribes.  In attendance were the Grateful<br \/>\nDead, the Jefferson Airplane, Timothy Leary, Allen Ginsberg, and thousands<br \/>\nof stoned hippies with painted faces, beads, bells, robes, etc.  The<br \/>\nDiggers were there giving out free food.  There was no big reason<br \/>\nto be there, other than to be there, hence a Be-In.  An event where<br \/>\nyou groove on everyone else.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=Gill Sans><b>Bellbottoms:<\/b> Pants with wide bell shaped<br \/>\nlegs worn by hippies. <\/font>Bought as cheap clothing at Army\/Navy surplus<br \/>\nstores, these were NAVY issued denim pants for sailors, once they caught<br \/>\non they were popularized to the point that major manufacturers made them.<\/p>\n<p><b>Benzedrine:<\/b>  &#8216;Bennies&#8217;..&#8217;Pep Pills&#8217; &#8216;Uppers&#8217;.  Used<br \/>\nas diet pills, these became abused as mood elevators.<\/p>\n<p><b>Berkeley:<\/b> The primary campus of the University of California<br \/>\nat Berkeley.  The origin of the Free Speech movement where the students<br \/>\nconfronted the University&#8217;s policies regarding the right to be vocal and<br \/>\npolitically active on campus property.  One of the centers of the<br \/>\nprotest movement in the 60&#8217;s.  Sproul Plaza was a gathering place<br \/>\nfor the protests.<\/p>\n<p><b>Birkenstocks<\/b> &#8211; These are sandals that were all the rage in the<br \/>\nearly 70&#8217;s.  They are shaped to your foot and toes with a fair amount<br \/>\nof support. Unfortunately they&#8217;re not for everyone, as I could never get<br \/>\na pair that felt right for my feet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/www.allposters.com\/link\/redirect.asp?aid=450636&#038;item=96342 target=_top rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img SRC=http:\/\/www.allposters.com\/images\/19\/POM1829_a.JPG ALT=Buy Malcolm X at AllPosters.com NOSAVE BORDER=0 height=115 width=77 align=LEFT><\/a><b>Black<br \/>\nMuslim Movement:<\/b>  Black separatist movement advocating racial<br \/>\ndivision and separation from White society. Two of these developed. One<br \/>\nwas under Elijah Muhammed. Malcolm X was part of this movement and chose<br \/>\nto splinter off into a separate movement when he found himself in disagreement<br \/>\nwith Elijah Muhammed over the approach to separatism, Islam, and religious<br \/>\nphilosophy.<\/p>\n<p><font face=Gill Sans><b>Black Panthers: <\/b>Armed, radical black political<br \/>\naction group. Panthers were a response to the victimization of Black people<br \/>\nby the white majority.  It&#8217;s leaders were imprisoned on various charges.<br \/>\nSee<\/font> Black Power<\/p>\n<p><b>Black Power: <\/b>Attributed to Stokely Carmichael who used it to<br \/>\nencourage blacks to attain more political clout. <b> <\/b>For a time<br \/>\nthis was a uniting theme among black people in the U.S.  It became<br \/>\na rallying cry for action against the racial injustice of the 50s and 60s.<br \/>\nBlack activists were ready to fight the system.  Huey Newton, Bobby<br \/>\nSeal, Eldridge Cleaver of the Black Panthers, Stokely Carmichael, Dick<br \/>\nGregory and Angela Davis were leaders in this radical movement.  Some<br \/>\nadvocated revolution and the overthrow of the U.S. government.  The<br \/>\nBlack Power movement struck fear into the heart of America&#8217;s bigots and<br \/>\nall the leaders were soon in jail, sometimes on trumped up charges, sometimes<br \/>\non real crimes.  In any case the movement fractured, but the legacy<br \/>\nof radical black activism had left its mark on America&#8217;s psyche.<\/p>\n<p><b>Black is Beautiful!<\/b>: Slogan used to instill pride among black<br \/>\nAmericans.<\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/www.allposters.com\/link\/redirect.asp?aid=450636&#038;item=153077 target=_top rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img SRC=http:\/\/www.allposters.com\/images\/38\/002_809_a.jpg ALT=Buy Jimi Hendrix at AllPosters.com NOSAVE BORDER=0 height=115 width=76 align=LEFT><\/a><b>Blacklight:<\/b><br \/>\nA special purple light that causes certain colored paint to glow brightly<br \/>\nin the dark.  Found in head shops, they are used to add a psychedelic<br \/>\neffect to posters and body paints.<\/p>\n<p><b>Blast:<\/b> A really great party or time.  British origin?<br \/>\nWe had a blast at the Stones concert!<\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B000001FDI\/hippylandhippiem><img SRC=http:\/\/www.hipmarket.com\/music\/blindfaith.jpg NOSAVE BORDER=0 height=170 width=170 align=RIGHT><\/a><b>Blind<br \/>\nFaith:<\/b> Rock group with Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker from Cream and Steve<br \/>\nWinwood from Traffic. Famous album cover shown.<\/p>\n<p><b>Blotter:<\/b> A type of LSD on assorted colorful paper, cut into small<br \/>\ndoses.<\/p>\n<p><b>Blow:<\/b> Cocaine. To waste something.  Don&#8217;t blow your dough<br \/>\non that Schwag. <\/p>\n<p><b>Blow Your Mind:<\/b> Surprise you in a mind expanding way by something<br \/>\nunbelievable. She really blew my mind with that head trip.<\/p>\n<p><font face=Gill Sans><b>Bong: <\/b>A long cylindrical tube with a bowl,<br \/>\nused to smoke marijuana tobacco or other substances.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><b>Body Paint:<\/b> To paint designs, words or slogans on one&#8217;s body<br \/>\nparts. Usually in wild patterns and often in paints that would glow under<br \/>\nBlacklight. Body painting wasn&#8217;t invented in the 60&#8217;s. Its a very old form<br \/>\nof decoration.<\/p>\n<p><b>Bogart:<\/b> To hog a joint while others are waiting.  Term refers<br \/>\nto Humphrey Bogart, who usually had a cigarette dangling from his mouth.<\/p>\n<p><b>Brand, Stewart:<\/b> Produced the Whole Earth Catalog, The Trips Festival,<br \/>\nfounded The WELL, the Point Foundation, Global Business Network, the Long<br \/>\nNow Foundation, the Co-Evolution Quarterly, on the board of directors of<br \/>\nthe Electronic Frontier Foundation.<\/p>\n<p><b>Bread:<\/b> Money.  Hey man, gotta any bread for the groceries?<\/p>\n<p><b>Bring Down:<\/b> Something or someone that ruins your day, and makes<br \/>\nyou lose your high.  My ol&#8217; man&#8217;s bringin&#8217; me down.<\/p>\n<p><b>Bro:<\/b> Used to describe any male friend.  Usually someone<br \/>\nyou can trust.  A brother.<\/p>\n<p><b>Buds:<\/b> Not beer, but cannabis flowers.<\/p>\n<p><b>Bug:<\/b> To bother someone.  Quit buggin&#8217; me!<\/p>\n<p><b>Bummer:<\/b> A bad thing.<\/p>\n<p><b>Bum Trip:<\/b> See Bad Trip.<\/p>\n<p><b>Bunk:<\/b> Bad drugs (fake not real like bunk doses).<\/p>\n<p><b>Bunker:<\/b> Someone who sells fake drugs, rips people off.<\/p>\n<p><b>Burn:<\/b> To get ripped off.  I got burned on that dope deal.<br \/>\nAlso to get mad.  I&#8217;m all burned up about that dope deal!<\/p>\n<p><b>Burn Baby Burn!<\/b>: Slogan used to describe rioting during Black<br \/>\nuprisings in U.S. cities during the civil strife of the late 60s. Detroit,<br \/>\nWatts, Chicago, Cleveland and other cities experienced days of rioting<br \/>\nand arson.  See the <a href=http:\/\/www.hippy.com\/calendar.htm>Hippyland<br \/>\nCalendar<\/a> for what happened when.<\/p>\n<p><b>Burn-out:<\/b> Too many drugs, unable to handle a situation that has<br \/>\ngotten too familiar. Wasted feelings of repeatition. Inability to function.<\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0802132952\/hippylandhippiem><img SRC=http:\/\/www.hipmarket.com\/bookstore\/lunch.gif NOSAVE BORDER=0 height=140 width=92 align=LEFT><\/a><b>Burroughs,<br \/>\nWilliam S. :<\/b> Beat author wrote autobiographical Naked Lunch about<br \/>\nhis life as a drug addict, murderer and homosexual. Other books include<br \/>\nJunky and Queer. Burroughs&#8217; thing was personal freedom.  To him<br \/>\nthis meant breaking all the rules, which he did whenever he could. Burroughs&#8217;<br \/>\ntalent is undeniable.  Depite (or because of?) being a junkie, he<br \/>\nwas able to convey what it&#8217;s like to be living on the dark edge of reality.<br \/>\nHis intake of all sorts of drugs obviously inspired some people to experiment.<br \/>\nMany beats and hippies can relate to Burroughs&#8217; life situation as a social<br \/>\noutcast from mainstream American society (remember much of this happened<br \/>\nin the 50&#8217;s).  Burroughs wrote about those things that no other writer<br \/>\nof his time (except Allen Ginsberg) would consider suitable subjects.<br \/>\nIndeed the publishing and subsequent banning of Naked Lunch turned into<br \/>\na landmark case for free speech in America. Burroughs influenced many around<br \/>\nhim including other authors and musicians.<\/p>\n<p><b>Busted: <\/b> To get arrested.  Did you hear?
