Two main subspecies<br \/>\nare Cannabis Sativa and Cannabis Indica.  Indica has wide leaves and<br \/>\nis short, while Sativa has narrow leaves and grows taller.  Hybrids<br \/>\nfrom both subspecies, blending the best traits, are often grown for commercial<br \/>\npurposes.<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=http:\/\/www.charm.net\/~brooklyn\/People\/NealCassady.html>Cassady,<br \/>\nNeal:<\/a><\/b> The inspiration for Dean Moriarty in Jack Kerouac&#8217;s On The<br \/>\nRoad and The Dharma Bums, Neal linked the beat generation with the hippies<br \/>\nby joining Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters on their Bus trip across<br \/>\nthe U.S. (as the driver!) in 1964.  He was part of the famous Acid<br \/>\nTests. Neal sought the freedom of the open road and could rap endlessly<br \/>\nin stream of consciousness style about everything.<\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0671732498\/hippylandhippiem><img SRC=http:\/\/www.hipmarket.com\/bookstore\/carlos.gif NOSAVE BORDER=0 height=140 width=90 align=LEFT><\/a><b>Castaneda,<br \/>\nCarlos:<\/b> An Anthropologist at UCLA, Carlos wrote a series of books about<br \/>\nthe shamanic tradition of the indigenous people of Mexico.  His apparently<br \/>\nfirst hand accounts of life as a sorcerer&#8217;s apprentice ignited decades<br \/>\nof controversy as to their reality.  His portrayal of himself as a<br \/>\nbumbling student of Don Juan, the powerful brujo, are now literary classics.<br \/>\nThe journeys he took on the path of the warrior through the world of spirits<br \/>\ninspired many to seek out what lies beyond our perceptions.  His books<br \/>\ninclude: A Separate Reality, Tales of Power and The Eagle&#8217;s Gift.<\/p>\n<p><a NAME=cat><\/a><b>Cat:<\/b> A male person who&#8217;s hip.  Beatnik<br \/>\nterm adopted by hippies.<\/p>\n<p><b>Centering:<\/b> Figuratively, to find one&#8217;s balance.  To center<br \/>\none&#8217;s awareness.<\/p>\n<p><b>Chakras:<\/b> Yogic concept. The seven chakras are physical and vibrational<br \/>\nenergy centers associated with the human body.  The first begins at<br \/>\nits base of the spine moving to the seventh at the top of the head.<br \/>\nIt is believed that by raising one&#8217;s awareness through the practice of<br \/>\nYoga one can transmute the lower energies of the first three chakras into<br \/>\nthe higher, finer vibrations of the remaining four chakras.<\/p>\n<p><b>Charas: <\/b>Hashish made by extended pressing of marijuana resin<br \/>\nby hand, resulting in a black, cylindrical potent piece.<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=http:\/\/clnet.ucr.edu\/research\/chavez\/bio\/>Chavez, Caesar<\/a>:<\/b><br \/>\nCharismatic leader and founder of the United Farmworkers Union.  Championed<br \/>\nthe underpaid, underrepresented migrant farm worker. Organized the five<br \/>\nyear grape boycott.  Chavez helped to inspire Chicano activism of<br \/>\nthe 1960s and 1970s, combining the lessons of the civil rights movement<br \/>\nand nonviolent protest with Mexican-American traditions and values.<\/p>\n<p><b>Chicago 1968:<\/b> Refers to the protests at the Chicago Democratic<br \/>\nConvention where thousands of protesters, reporters and bystanders were<br \/>\ncaught up in a battle with the police.  Mayor Daly took credit for<br \/>\nthe bloodshed while millions watched on T.V.<\/p>\n<p><b>Chicago Seven:<\/b> The group of organizers of the protests at the<br \/>\nChicago Democratic Convention in 1968.  The Chicago Seven included<br \/>\nAbbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Black Panther leader Bobby Seale and Tom Hayden.<br \/>\nThey were charged with conspiracy and defended by William Kunstler.<\/p>\n<p><b>Chick:<\/b> A girl.<\/p>\n<p><b>Choice:<\/b> Like the FDHA stamp, refers to something of quality.<br \/>\nI got some choice buds for the party<\/p>\n<p><b>City:<\/b> Following certain words indicating a profoundness or a<br \/>\nlot of the previous word.  John Coltrane and Miles Davis were at<br \/>\nthe concert, man it was Jazz City!<\/p>\n<p><b>Civil Rights Movement:<\/b> Started in the 50&#8217;s the civil rights movement<br \/>\ngathered steam in the early 60&#8217;s with marches, passive resistance and speeches.<br \/>\nForemost among the leaders were Martin Luther King Jr., Medgar Evers, Jesse<br \/>\nJackson, and Malcolm X. These protests and the non-violent means used were<br \/>\ninspiration for the student anti-war protests that were to follow a few<br \/>\nyears later.<\/p>\n<p><b>Clean:<\/b> After prolonged drug use, a period of abstinence which<br \/>\nallows the body to remove all traces of drugs.  A drug free state.<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve been clean for six months now.<\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00004TKEP\/hippylandhippiem><img SRC=http:\/\/www.hipmarket.com\/music\/cocker2.jpg NOSAVE BORDER=0 height=128 width=130 align=LEFT><\/a><b>Cocker,<br \/>\nJoe:<\/b> Sang the theme song of The Wonder Years &#8211; a cover of the Beatles<br \/>\ntune With a little help from my friends off the famous Sgt. Pepper&#8217;s<br \/>\nLonely Hearts Club Band record.  He sang a super version of that song<br \/>\nat Woodstock.<\/p>\n<p><b>Commune:<\/b> Word comes from Communist ideology.  Used to describe<br \/>\na group of people living together, and the place they live.  Communes<br \/>\npractice self-sufficiency, often farming the land.<\/p>\n<p><b>Conscientious Objector:<\/b> A draftee could apply for 1-O status<br \/>\nif they could prove that serving in the military went against their religious<br \/>\nor moral beliefs.  With 1-O status your were excused from military<br \/>\nduty, but still required to do civilian service.  During the Vietnam<br \/>\nWar, this status was rarely granted.<\/p>\n<p><b>Contact High:<\/b> An altered state of consciousness that people get<br \/>\njust being around other people who are doing psychedelic drugs. <\/p>\n<p><b>Cool:<\/b> Groovy, OK, farout.  That&#8217;s a real cool tie-dye!<\/p>\n<p><b>Cool it:<\/b> Or Be Cool.  Mellow Out. Calm down or stop what<br \/>\nyou&#8217;re doing.  Hey can you cool it with the music, I&#8217;m trying to<br \/>\nmellow out.<\/p>\n<p><b>Co-op:<\/b> Cooperative business, usually a health food store run<br \/>\nby hippies. Members are part owners and many actively participate in the<br \/>\nbusiness.  Based on Marxist principles.<\/p>\n<p><b>Cop out:<\/b>  Escape from responsibility.  Don&#8217;t cop out<br \/>\nwhen your bro is in need.<\/p>\n<p><b>Cosmic:<\/b> An idea or person really out there on the edge of comprehension.<\/p>\n<p><b>Counterculture:<\/b> The encompassing word for the hippie movement.<br \/>\nNot just a sub-culture, but an entire spectrum of individuals rejecting<br \/>\nthe values of the dominant society.  This term was far more acceptable<br \/>\nto everyone than the word hippies.<\/p>\n<p><b>Coyote, Peter:<\/b> Actor, author, member of the San Francisco Mime<br \/>\nTroupe, one of the original Diggers.  His new book <a href=http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/1887178678\/hippylandhippiem>Sleeping<br \/>\nWhere I Fall<\/a>, tells of his days in S.F.<\/p>\n<p><b>Crash:<\/b> To stay in someone else&#8217;s place.  To come down off<br \/>\nAcid or another intense drug.<\/p>\n<p><b>Crash Pad: <\/b>A place where hippies could hang out, do drugs, sleep,<br \/>\nhave sex, etc. without having to pay rent.  They would come and go,<br \/>\nwith different people staying there every night.<\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0934558000\/hippylandhippiem><img SRC=http:\/\/www.hipmarket.com\/bookstore\/dasenergi.gif NOSAVE BORDER=0 height=140 width=94 align=LEFT><\/a><b>Crawdaddy:<\/b><br \/>\nFirst magazine to cover the Rock Music scene.  Published by <a href=http:\/\/www.paulwilliams.com>Paul<br \/>\nWilliams<\/a>, author of Das Energi. <a href=http:\/\/www.paulwilliams.com>Crawdaddy<\/a><br \/>\nis publishing again!<\/p>\n<p><b>Credibility Gap:<\/b> This phrase was used to describe the public&#8217;s<br \/>\ngrowing unease with the U.S. government public statements about the war<br \/>\nin Vietnam (we&#8217;re winning, it&#8217;ll be over soon, etc.) and the increasingly<br \/>\nobvious truth (more troops going over, more body bags coming back).<\/p>\n<p><b>Cronkite, Walter: <\/b>Uncle Walt was considered the most believable<br \/>\nbroadcaster in U.S. history. In 1968, he broke the code of neutrality among<br \/>\nmajor newscasters, by opposing the Vietnam War in a national television<br \/>\nbroadcast.  His integrity is unquestioned. <\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B000002J0P\/hippylandhippiem><img SRC=http:\/\/www.hipmarket.com\/music\/csny3.gif NOSAVE BORDER=0 height=130 width=130 align=LEFT><\/a><b>Crosby,<br \/>\nStills, Nash:<\/b>  They burst on the music scene at Woodstock in 1969,<br \/>\nwith their fabulous harmonies.  Many of their tunes became anthems<br \/>\nduring the anti-war movement.  These included Ohio (about the Kent<br \/>\nState massacre), and Chicago (about the riots at the Democratic Convention<br \/>\nin &#8217;68).  They also teamed with Neil Young on several great recordings<br \/>\nincluding Deja Vu and Four Way Street.<\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/093019392X\/hippylandhippiem><img SRC=http:\/\/www.hipmarket.com\/bookstore\/completecrumb5.gif NOSAVE BORDER=0 height=140 width=105 align=RIGHT><\/a><b>Crumb,<br \/>\nRobert:<\/b> Famous cartoonist of the 60&#8217;s and 70&#8217;s, Crumb introduced the<br \/>\nworld to his somewhat depraved, yet humorous visions via Zap Comics, Mr.<br \/>\nNatural, and Fritz the Cat.  His inspired and unique style captured<br \/>\nthe essence of the times.  Always the social critic, Crumb used his<br \/>\nart to convey the anti-establishment sentiment that swept the country.<\/p>\n<p><b>Cuban Missile Crisis:<\/b> &#8211; When U.S. satellite photos showed Soviet<br \/>\nmissile bases in Cuba, President Kennedy ordered a naval blockade of Cuba.<br \/>\nThe tense standoff nearly caused a nuclear war in 1962.<\/p>\n<p><a NAME=D><\/a><b>Da Kine:<\/b> Term for top quality Hawaiian pakalolo.<\/p>\n<p><b>Dashiki:<\/b> A very colorful long sleeved African shirt.  They<br \/>\npullover your head and have a v-cut below the neck.  The dashiki is<br \/>\nnever tucked into your pants but worn as loose as possible.  They<br \/>\nare cool in summer.  Hippies wore these because they have beautiful<br \/>\nand colorful designs with African patterns.  They are still very popular<br \/>\nwith African musicians.<\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0517543052\/hippylandhippiem><img SRC=http:\/\/www.hipmarket.com\/bookstore\/beherenow.gif NOSAVE BORDER=0 height=140 width=139 align=LEFT><\/a><font face=Gill Sans><b>Dass,<br \/>\nRam:<\/b> also known as Dr. Richard Alpert. Author of Be Here Now, Grist<br \/>\nfor the Mill. Worked with Timothy Leary at Harvard on LSD studies. Alpert<br \/>\nwas so changed by the ingestion of LSD, he left his post and wandered through<br \/>\nIndia. Finding enlightenment he returned to write several books and do<br \/>\nthe lecture circuit.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=Gill Sans><b><a href=http:\/\/www.vida.com\/speakout\/People\/AngelaDavis.html>Davis,<br \/>\nAngela:<\/a><\/b> Radical black teacher at UCLA.  She was dismissed<br \/>\nfrom UCLA in 1969 due to her radical politics.  She was a Black Panther<br \/>\nand made the FBI&#8217;s most wanted list in 1970 on false charges.  She<br \/>\nbecame an icon as an intelligent, outspoken radical young black woman.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=Gill Sans><b>Day-Glo:<\/b> Colorful paint that glows in<br \/>\nthe dark. Popular with psychedelic art on objects and faces, especially<br \/>\nduring the Electric Kool Aid Acid Tests.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=Gill Sans><b>Designer Drugs:<\/b> Any of a vast number of<br \/>\ncustom made drugs that are designed to be chemically different from illegal<br \/>\ndrugs, but similar in effect to those drugs. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=Gill Sans><b>Dharma: <\/b>Indian word for one&#8217;s life purpose<br \/>\nand work. The principle or law that orders the universe.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0140042520\/hippylandhippiem><img SRC=http:\/\/www.hipmarket.com\/bookstore\/kerouac2.gif NOSAVE BORDER=0 height=140 width=91 align=RIGHT><\/a><font face=Gill Sans><b>Dharma<br \/>\nBums:<\/b> Jack Kerouac&#8217;s book about the beat philosophy&#8217;s roots in Zen<br \/>\nBuddhism.  He chronicles his adventures in California and a trip across<br \/>\nthe country, ending in a reflective stint up on a mountain as a fire lookout.<br \/>\nThis rucksack wanderer sure met some interesting people on his journeys<br \/>\nincluding poet Allen Ginsberg and Buddhist Gary Snyder.  This book<br \/>\nand On The Road inspired many a hippy to take to the road in search of<br \/>\nonself.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=Gill Sans><b>Dig:<\/b> To understand. Dig it?  To<br \/>\nlike something.  I really dig the Monkees.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=Gill Sans><b>Diggers:<\/b> Group that gave away food and<br \/>\nclothes in Haight-Asbury.  They followed the anti-materialist teachings<br \/>\nof the English Diggers who fought against private ownership of land and<br \/>\nproperty.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=Gill Sans><b>Dime Bag:<\/b> $10 worth of dope.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><b>Discotheques:<\/b> Places to go hear rock music and see light shows<br \/>\nand dance. Converted to Discos in the mid 70&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=http:\/\/www.lycaeum.org\/drugs\/other\/gandz\/gandz.dmt.html>DMT:<\/a><\/b><br \/>\nDimethyltryptamine.  A very powerful hallucinogen that is smoked in<br \/>\na pipe.  It gives short intense trips of a very specific nature. Their music, with its strong beat and Fender<br \/>\nRhodes chords define a certain style that meshed well with the psychedelic<br \/>\nflower power generation.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p><\/center><\/p>\n<p><b>Dose:<\/b> From the word dosage, a single hit of a drug, especially<br \/>\nLSD.  If you do too much you overdose.<\/p>\n<p><b>Dovetail:<\/b> A European styled and rolled joint, looks like a bird. <\/p>\n<p><b>Downer: <\/b>Someone or something that brings you down, makes<br \/>\nyou sad. Derogatory.  It&#8217;s a downer having Nixon as president!<\/p>\n<p><b>Downers:<\/b> Any drug used as a depressant-includes Seconal, Phenylbarbitol,<br \/>\nand others.<\/p>\n<p><b>Draft:<\/b> The mandantory call to military service for young men.<br \/>\nAll 18 year old males are required to register with the Selective Service,<br \/>\nwhich maintains records of your availability to serve in the military.<br \/>\nIt takes an act of Congress to reinstate the draft.<\/p>\n<p><b>Draft Card:<\/b> Issued by the draft board, it was usually your ticket<br \/>\nto Vietnam. Many antiwar protesters and draft dodgers burned their draft<br \/>\ncards in public antiwar protests. This activity sent many of them to jail.<\/p>\n<p><b>Draft Dodger:<\/b> Anyone who avoided the Vietnam era compulsory draft<br \/>\neither by getting the draft board to declare him undesirable or by fleeing<br \/>\nto another country, usually Canada. To be declared undesirable or 4-F,<br \/>\nyou would have to fail the physical or mental qualifications. Draft dodgers<br \/>\nused techniques that ranged from conscientious objector (which rarely worked),<br \/>\nto acting gay or pretending to be a junkie.<\/p>\n<p><b>Draft Lottery:<\/b> The current system whereby your birthdate determines<br \/>\nyour draft eligibilty.  A number is drawn for every day of the year.<br \/>\nIf your birthday gets #15, then people born on your birthday will all be15th<br \/>\nin line to be called.<\/p>\n<p><b>Drag:<\/b>  Bummer, something definitely unenjoyable.  It&#8217;s<br \/>\na drag that we&#8217;re outta dope!<\/p>\n<p><b>Drop Acid: <\/b>To take a dose of LSD.<\/p>\n<p><b>Drum Circle:<\/b> A fun event where hippies get together to play drums<br \/>\nor other percussion instruments and dance.  These are reminiscent<br \/>\nof pagan celebrations of special occasions like rites of passage or harvest.<br \/>\nThe rhythm of the beat tunes the participant into something larger than<br \/>\nhimself.  The effect leads to a sense of community and transcendence.<br \/>\nIn other words it gets you high! After his release he joined the<br \/>\nBlack Panthers and became their Minister of Information.  Involvement<br \/>\nin a gun battle forced him into a seven year exile.<\/p>\n<p><b>Electric Kool-Aid:<\/b> Another term for LSD, coined when the Pranksters<br \/>\ncombined Kool-Aid and Acid during the Acid Tests of the 1960s.  Used<br \/>\nin the title of Tom Wolfe&#8217;s book about Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters,<br \/>\nThe Electric Kool Aid Acid Test<\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0553264915\/hippylandhippiem><img SRC=http:\/\/www.hipmarket.com\/bookstore\/wolfe2.gif NOSAVE BORDER=0 height=140 width=83 align=LEFT><\/a><b>The<br \/>\nElectric Kool Aid Acid Test:<\/b> Tom Wolfe&#8217;s book about Ken Kesey and the<br \/>\nMerry Pranksters. A tribute to Kesey, the<br \/>\nPranksters (including Neal Cassady, Ken Babbs, Mountain Girl and Wavy Gravy),<br \/>\nand the whole psychedelic generation. Good insight into how the torch was<br \/>\npassed from the Beats to the hippies. It also contrasts Kesey&#8217;s up front,<br \/>\nexperiential movement versus Timothy Leary&#8217;s experimental, insightful approach<br \/>\nto the LSD trip.<\/p>\n<p><b>Enlightenment:<\/b> Attainment of a higher awareness of the reality<br \/>\nbeyond the illusion (Maya).<\/p>\n<p><b>E.R.A.:<\/b> The Equal Rights Amendment.  Bans discrimination<br \/>\nbased upon sex. Still not law.
