<\/a>Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers<\/b> – Gilbert Sheldon’s
\npopular comic about the adventures of three stoned out hippies.<\/p>\n

Fad:<\/b> A popular craze, a temporary fashion. <\/p>\n

Far Out!: <\/b>Something wonderful. An expression
\nof glee or approval. Also a way of saying thanks.<\/font><\/p>\n

Feds and Heads:<\/b> A classic dope dealing
\ngame.<\/font><\/p>\n

Ferlinghetti, Lawrence:<\/b> Poet, publisher
\nand owner of the City Lights Bookstore in North Beach, San Francisco.
\nPart of the beat scene in San Francisco, Ferlinghetti published Allen Ginsberg’s
\ncontroversial poem Howl in 1957, which landed him in jail, but lead to
\na landmark decision upholding free speech.<\/font><\/p>\n

Fillmore posters<\/b> – The Fillmore East and West were concert venues
\nin the 60’s that had introuduced some of the biggest rock acts to American
\naudiences including The Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane,
\netc. The posters for those concerts are now collectors items and
\nsome are very valuable since the art work was very psychedelic.<\/p>\n

Finger Hash:<\/b> Potent Black Nepalese hashish formed into finger
\nshapes or charas.<\/p>\n

Flaky:<\/b> Someone unreliable, untrustworthy.<\/p>\n

Flashback:<\/b> A spontaneous psychedelic experience that reminds
\none of a previous trip, but without any drugs. Every time I climb
\nthat mountain I get flashbacks from my acid trip there back in 1969.<\/p>\n

Flip Out:<\/b> To lose it. To go crazy. Mike flipped
\nout after his chick Sunshine left.<\/p>\n

Floating:<\/b> High on drugs.<\/p>\n

Fly:<\/b> To be high. Two tokes of that stuff and you’re flying!<\/p>\n

Flower Children:<\/b> The hippies were called Flower Children because
\nthey wore flowers in their hair, on their clothes and painted flowers on
\neverything.<\/p>\n

Flower Power: <\/b>Term coined in 1965 by Allen ginsberg at an anti-war
\nrally in Berkeley. It was Ginsberg’s way of encouraging a non-violent
\nresponse to violence protesters encountered. Since hippies were fond
\nof wearing and sharing flowers, Flower Power was the hippie equivalent
\nof the Black Power movement. An extension of the Peace and Love theme,
\nFlower Power assumed that the power of Love would win out over violence
\nand hate.<\/p>\n

Flowers: <\/b>Cannabis buds.<\/p>\n

Buy<\/a>Fonda,
\nJane:<\/b> Actress daughter of Henry Fonda, Jane made a name for herself
\nas a political activist when she married Tom Hayden, one of the Chicago
\nSeven. Jane was also outspoken and made a controversial trip to Hanoi,
\nNorth Vietnam during the war. Jane starred in Barbarella, a campy sci-fi.<\/p>\n

Four-Twenty, 4:20:<\/b> Supposedly referred to the California penal
\ncode for marijuana use, but others say it was the time a certain group
\nof students used to get together after classes to get high. Adopted
\nby heads everywhere as the time to light up! It’s currently very
\npopular for the name of websites, and it appears regularly in marijuana
\nmagazines. <\/p>\n

Freak: <\/b>To Freak or to Freak OUT. Freak could be used as
\na term for being ‘into’ something, as in interested in something..like..’Freaking
\nover cars’. To Freak- usually meant to get upset or be afraid of something…
\nFreak OUT- meant to go wild over something–or have a really wild experience..as
\nin they all freaked out when he showed up in body paint alone.<\/p>\n

Freak Flag:<\/b> Long Hair<\/p>\n

Freaks: <\/b> Calling someone a ‘freak’—Freaks were people
\nwho were cool because it was who they were. Hippies often were hippies
\nbecause it was the ‘in thing to do’. Freaks did things not because they
\nwere hip, but because it was who they were as a person.<\/p>\n

Freedom Fighter:<\/b> Current Hippie term (late 80’s-90’s) for a person
\ninvolved in the political movement to legalize grass.<\/p>\n

Free Love:<\/b> The idealistic concept embraced by the hippies that
\nLove needn’t be bound by convention. People are free to love whomever
\nthey please, whenever they please, wherever they please, without attachment
\nor commitment. This was practiced by many hippies and helped spawn
\nthe Women’s and Gay Liberation Movements.<\/p>\n

Free Speech Movement:<\/a><\/b> Arose
\nin 1964, on the Berkeley campus of the University of California as a result
\nof the administration prohibiting student political activities on campus.
\nStudents held rallies on the steps of the Administration building (Sproul
\nHall) and sit-ins inside demanding freedom of speech. Many students
\nwere beaten, arrested, and some are suspended including Mario Savio, the
\nfounder of the movement and one of the more outspoken student protesters.
\nEventually the Berkeley faculty members came up with a proposal to restore
\nfree speech and the University Chancellor was replaced.<\/p>\n

Fritz the Cat:<\/b> Cartoonist R. Crumb’s fabled feline became famous
\nfor appearing in two feature films. <\/p>\n

Fry:<\/b> To be too high, usually on psychedelic drugs. I did
\n300 mikes, I’m frying!<\/p>\n

Fried:<\/b> Burned out from doing too much dope<\/p>\n

Funky:<\/b> This word was given a new meaning
\nby the hippies. It described clothing that wasn’t supposed to go together,
\nbut somehow managed to look good. The meaning of the word became more vague,
\nbut still meant something with an unusual campy style, like clothes, music,
\nor attitude. Get Funky!<\/font><\/p>\n

Fuzz: <\/b> Another name for the police, pigs, fuzz, cops, and
\n‘the man’ were the common terms.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Gandhi, Mahatma:<\/b> Once a lawyer in South Africa,
\nGandhi came to India and fought British oppression through the pioneering
\nuse of non-violent protest. His methods were adopted in the 60s by
\nthe civil rights and antiwar movements. The confrontative, yet unaggressive
\ntechniques are now the standard for peaceful protest.<\/p>\n

Gaskin, Stephen:<\/b> Stephen gained famed for his Monday night classes
\nat San Francisco State where he talked about hippy values. When he
\ntook to the road his students followed and soon there was a caravan of
\nwandering gypsies, 400 people in 60 vehicles. He eventually settled
\ndown with them and started The Farm, a long-lived Tennessee commune which
\npioneered organic and alternative methods of agriculture, education and
\nsocial interaction. <\/p>\n

Gay Liberation Movement:<\/b> An outgrowth of the Sexual Liberation
\nmovement that started when NYC police raided a Greenwich Village gay bar
\nin 1968. In the resulting riot 2000 demonstrators battled 400 police
\nwith many injuries.<\/p>\n

Generation Gap:<\/b> Term highlighting the differences in perspective
\nbetween hippies and their parents.<\/p>\n

Get High:<\/b> To turn on. To do a drug. To alter your
\nconsciousness in a pleasant way. I got high just listening to Joni
\nsing!<\/p>\n

Get into it!:<\/b> Dig it! Go for it! Do it with
\nyour whole being.<\/p>\n

Get it together!:<\/b> Also: Get your shit together. Shape up!<\/p>\n

Get Laid:<\/b> Have sex.<\/p>\n

Get Real!:<\/b> Stop dreaming! Get real man, nobody’s gonna
\nget high smokin’ banana peels!<\/p>\n

Getting Off: <\/b>When a drug takes effect and you start to get high.
\nAlso means to enjoy something. I get off on Jerry’s licks.<\/p>\n

Gig:<\/b> A concert or a job. Something to do.<\/p>\n

Gimme Shelter:<\/b> Documentary movie about the ill fated Altamont
\nconcert. Also a Rolling Stones song about the event.<\/p>\n

Ginsberg, Allen: <\/b>Controversial Beat poet from the 50’s who wrote
\nabout following your instincts and free love. Howl 1956, is one
\nof Ginsberg’s most famous poems. Along with his friends Jack Kerouac
\nand William S. Burroughs, he helped define and document the activities
\nof the Beat Generation. Ginsberg was active in the anti-war movement
\nappearing at rallies and also the Human Be-In. Ginsberg is credited
\nwith coining the term Flower Power.<\/p>\n

Give Peace a Chance:<\/b> Saying on banners
\nand John Lennon song sung by protesters.<\/font><\/p>\n

Go Down:<\/b> Something happening. What
\nwent down at the protest yesterday? Also a blow job (oral sex).
\nShe went down on me and I let loose!<\/font><\/p>\n

Going through Changes:<\/b> To have a transforming
\nexperience. A negative experience. My parents are putting
\nme through changes<\/font><\/p>\n

Go For It!:<\/b> Do it!<\/font><\/p>\n

Gone: <\/b> Really out of it. Not
\naware. Asleep.<\/font><\/p>\n

Go Straight:<\/b> To stop using drugs. To get
\nyour act together.<\/font><\/p>\n

Go with the Flow: <\/b>Taoist philosophy of
\nliving in the moment, without struggle, letting things happen as they may.<\/font><\/p>\n

Graham, Bill:<\/b> Rock impresario whose Fillmore
\nAuditorium in San Francisco, and Fillmore East in New York highlighted
\nthe best rock acts of the sixties including the Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix,
\nthe Jefferson Airplane and more.<\/font><\/p>\n

Granny Glasses:<\/b> Small wire framed glasses
\nwith round or square colored lenses. Made popular by rock musicians including
\nJohn Lennon and Jerry Garcia.<\/font><\/p>\n

Grass: <\/b>Marijuana<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/a>Grateful
\nDead: <\/b>The ultimate hippie band, from San Francisco. For thirty years
\nJerry Garcia and his faithful band brought hallucinatory music to their
\nlegions of fans. Some of those fans followed them on the road year
\nafter year.<\/font><\/p>\n

Great Society:<\/b> LBJ’s far-reaching
\neconomic and social plan begun in the boom years of the early 1960’s. It
\nachieved some worthwhile goals including Medicare and other workers benefits.
\nIt got sidetracked by the financial burden of the Vietnam War.<\/font><\/p>\n

Green:<\/b> Someone active in the Ecology Movement.
\nA product that respects ecology, using biodegradable substances for example.<\/font><\/p>\n

Greenwich Village:<\/b> Also referred to as
\nThe Village. Home to the Beats in the late 50s, early 60s when the coffeehouse
\nscene was hot. Artists, writers, poets, musicians all were attracted
\nto the <\/font>area. Later in the 60s, the hippies invaded and the scene
\nmoved to the less expensive East Village where institutions like the Fillmore
\nEast kept things lively.<\/p>\n

Gregory, Dick:<\/b> Black activist undertook
\nseveral hunger strikes.<\/font><\/p>\n

Grimshaw, Gary: <\/b>Very promient graphic
\nArtist well known for his posters and flyers of all rock bands that past
\nthru Michigan in the late 60’s-early 70’s and played such meccas as the
\nGrande Ballroom and\/or Eastowne Theatre. His body of work reads like a
\nwho’s who in the 60’s music\/counter-culture scene.<\/font><\/p>\n

Grok:<\/b> A deep understanding of a concept.
\nFrom Robert Heinlein’s Strangers in a Strange Land.<\/font><\/p>\n

Groove:<\/b> A good habit or style. I’m
\ngetting into the groove of doing gigs every week.<\/font><\/p>\n

Groovy!:<\/b> Very pleasing, wonderful.<\/font><\/p>\n

Guitar Army:<\/b> Book\/Manifesto written by
\nJohn Sinclair outlining the Counter Revolution of the Woodstock Nation<\/font><\/p>\n

Guru:<\/b> A teacher, especially in India.<\/font><\/p>\n

Guthrie, Arlo:<\/b> Son of legendary folk singer
\nWoody Guthrie, Arlo made a name for himself with his record Alice’s Restaurant.
\nArlo’s folk rock style combines protest and storytelling.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/a>Haight-Ashbury: <\/b>The famous intersection in San
\nFrancisco near Golden Gate Park where the hippies came in the Summer of
\nLove, and never left! This area was the focus for much of the hippie
\nmovement’s beginnings and inspiration.<\/p>\n

Hair!<\/b>:<\/a>
\nHit Broadway rock musical famous as much for its nudity as for its music.
\nFamous tunes include Aquarius, Hair, Good Morning Starshine.<\/p>\n

Buy<\/a>Hallucination:<\/b>
\nAn altered state of awareness where one perceives a completely different
\nobjective reality. More than just visual distortions, the person
\nbelieves the hallucination to be real.<\/p>\n

Hang Up: <\/b> A personality quirk resulting from something bothersome
\nthat makes your life miserable. She ignored me! She must be all
\nhung up about something.<\/p>\n

Happening:<\/b> An event where people get together just to be together,
\nusually involving music.<\/p>\n

Happy Trails!:<\/b> Have a nice TRIP!<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n

Hare Krishnas:<\/b> Religious group which grew during the 60s by recruiting
\nmany hippies. Characterized by their chanting, colorful robes, shaven
\nheads and pigtails they could be seen parading through city streets around
\nthe country. They worship the Hindu God, Krishna and abstain from
\nmeat, hoping to achieve higher consciousness through devotion.<\/p>\n

Hash Bash:<\/b> The Nations First and longest running protest for
\nthe legalization of Marijauna. (Takes place at the University of
\nMichigan every April 1st). Also a show\/contest displaying various
\ntypes of hashish and marijuana in Amsterdam.<\/p>\n

Hashish: <\/b>Compressed potent form of marijuana,
\nproduced in the Middle East, Himalayan region and Africa. Also known as
\nhash. Process removes resin containing THC from the marijuana plant usually
\nusing screens, or hands.<\/font><\/p>\n

Hassle:<\/b> A bother, something that you’d
\nrather not deal with. Don’t hassle me about the rent, I’ll get it
\nlater.<\/font><\/p>\n

Hayden, Tom:<\/b> Political activist, one of
\nthe Chicago Seven, ex-husband of Jane Fonda. Now a congressman from
\nCalifornia.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/a>Havens,
\nRichie:<\/b> Richie Havens’ unique style of rhythm guitar combined with
\nhis passionate vocals make for an unforgettable experience. At Woodstock
\nhe sang Handsome Johnny and Freedom to open the event.<\/font><\/p>\n

Head:<\/b> Some one who does certain drugs like pot head or acid
\nhead.<\/p>\n

Headbands:<\/b> Headbands obviously keep your long hair out
\nof your face. They also mop up the sweat on warm days. And
\nsince men don’t usually wear berets or other feminine hair restraints,
\nthe headband does the job.<\/p>\n

Head Shops:<\/b> (Boutiques) Stores that catered to hippies or the
\nyoung. Clothes, comics, beads, candles, jewelry and drug paraphernalia
\nwere obtainable at these shops.. they also made good hang outs.<\/p>\n

Head Trip:<\/b> To play games with someone’s
\nmind. A person or situation that messes with your mind.<\/font><\/p>\n

Heavy Metal:<\/b> Hard, loud rock music, characterized
\nby a heavy beat and thunderous guitars. Term originated with Steppenwolf
\n(heavy metal thunder) in the song Born to Be Wild.<\/font>
\n

Buy<\/a>Hendrix,
\nJimi: <\/b>The greatest guitar player ever. Jimi could coax sounds
\nfrom his axe that no one had ever heard before. His guitar mastery impressed
\nevery great musician since. His on stage persona and charisma is
\nunmatched. Jimi gave legendary performances at Monterey Pop, Woodstock,
\nthe Fillmore. He died at the peak of his career. Jimi was a great
\nsoul who soared so high he was able to take us along for the ride of our
\nlives..<\/font><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n

<\/center><\/p>\n

Hell No We Won’t Go!: <\/b>Popular chant at demonstrations against
\nthe war in Vietnam.<\/p>\n

High:<\/b> Stoned. An altered state. Pleasantly turned
\non.<\/p>\n

Hip:<\/b> Aware of what’s going on. Knowledgeable. I’m hip
\nto what’s happening. Something cool or groovy. Those are
\nthe hippest love beads I’ve ever seen!<\/p>\n

Hip Huggers:<\/b> Jeans that rested low on the hips, exposing the
\nnavel, especially on a girl wearing a halter top.<\/p>\n

Hippie:<\/b> A person who’s hip. Hippies did not refer to themselves
\nas such. The term became derogatory but is again fashionable.
\nThe whole anti-materialist, anti-war, pro peace, pro mind expansion counterculture
\nhas been termed the Hippie Movement. <\/b>San Francisco writer
\nMichael Fallon applied the term hippie to the SF counterculture in an
\narticle about the Blue Unicorn coffeehouse where LEMAR (Legalize Marijuana)
\n& the Sexual Freedom League meet, & hippie houses. <\/p>\n

Hit:<\/b> A dose of a drug, like a hit of acid or a hit from the
\njoint<\/p>\n

Hit and Run:<\/b> To be at a demonstration or protest and be chased
\nby police while stopping to take a toke, then running off to avoid arrest.<\/p>\n

Hoffman, Abbie:<\/b> Co-founder of the Yippies. Author of Steal This
\nBook. One of the Chicago 7. Outspoken advocate of anarchy.<\/p>\n

Hoffman, Albert: <\/b>Sandoz scientist who
\ninadvertently discovered the mind transporting properties of LSD.<\/font><\/p>\n

Hog Farm:<\/b> This activist, mobile commune
\nonce was located on a mountain top near L.A.in the 60s. Later, the Hog
\nFarm went on the road living in a fleet of converted school buses and traveled
\nthe country protesting the Vietnam War. <\/font>At Woodstock ’69, the Hog
\nFarm helped feed the assembled multitude, and assisted those having bad
\ntrips. After Woodstock, the Hog Farm personnel traveled
\nthrough Europe to Nepal, and distributed medical supplies to Pakistani
\nflood victims. The Hog Farm’s most famous personage, Wavy Gravy, a Merry
\nPrankster, was a founding member.<\/font><\/p>\n

Holding:<\/b> In possession of something, usually
\ndope. I’m holding a special lid for you.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/a>Howl:<\/b>Allen
\nGinsberg’s controversial book of poetry that was declared obscene and banned.
\nGinsberg won the court case, a landmark for free speech. Ginsberg
\npioneered a new style of writing and artfully expressed his innermost rage
\nat society’s shortcomings. Ginsberg’s dramtic reading of this work at coffeehouses
\nin the 50s and 60s enthralled those angelheaded hipsters and established
\nhis reputation in literary circles.<\/font><\/p>\n

<\/a>Huxley,
\nAldous:<\/b> Author of the famous science fiction novel, Brave New World,
\nand the ground breaking Doors of Perception, Huxley explored the inner
\nrealms of the mind. His thirst for the insightful psychedelic experience
\nled him to LSD, which he ingested as he lay on his deathbed.<\/font><\/p>\n

Hype: <\/b>To promote something excessively.<\/font>
\n
