Temples and<br \/>\nchurches are fond of it. Supposedly it drives out the evil spirits.<br \/>\nMost of the incense we use in the west comes from India. When the<br \/>\nhippies got going they would buy incense to mask the smell of marijuana.<br \/>\nIncense can also assist in meditation by giving your space an exotic feel.<br \/>\nSince incense comes in a wonderful assortment of scents you can just use<br \/>\nit to add a nice fragrance to your house.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"J\"><\/a><b>Jackson State: <\/b> Two student protesters at<br \/>\nJackson State University (Mississippi) were shot and killed by state police<br \/>\non <a href=\"http:\/\/ccaix.jsums.edu\/~www\/gg01.htm\">May 15th, 1970<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B000002W5J\/hippylandhippiem\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hipmarket.com\/music\/airplane.gif\" width=\"185\" height=\"183\" align=\"LEFT\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><b>Jefferson<br \/>\nAirplane:<\/b> Another San Francisco band that took off on the Summer of<br \/>\nLove. After Balin left it became the Jefferson Starship.<\/p>\n<p><b>Jeanette Rankin Brigade:<\/b> A coalition of<br \/>\nwomen&#8217;s peace groups, who demonstrated against the Vietnam war at the opening<br \/>\nof Congress in 1968. 5000 women attended.<\/p>\n<p><b>Jesus Freaks:<\/b> A movement of people who just discovered Jesus<br \/>\nand Christianity. They would get together with signs and banners<br \/>\nto promote Jesus. Some hippies went this route. Often they<br \/>\nwere &#8216;false&#8217; hippies, who used the hip image to proselytize Christianity.<br \/>\nHippies who were Christians sincerely were also Jesus Freaks&#8230;and were<br \/>\ncool.<\/p>\n<p><b>Joint:<\/b> A marijuana cigarette.<\/p>\n<p><b>Jonesing:<\/b> When you want something real bad especially drugs.<\/p>\n<p><b>Joneser:<\/b> Someone who wants drugs real bad that he&#8217;ll rip you<br \/>\noff if he has to.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00000K2W1\/hippylandhippiem\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hipmarket.com\/music\/janis.gif\" width=\"184\" height=\"180\" align=\"LEFT\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><b><a href=\"http:\/\/members.spree.com\/sip\/kozmicblues\/janis.html\">Joplin,<br \/>\nJanis:<\/a><\/b> Blues singer extraordinaire. Cheap<br \/>\nThrills, their debut album featured a classic cover by Robert Crumb and<br \/>\nthe hits Summertime and Ball and Chain. Janis&#8217; grief stricken life<br \/>\ncame to an end with a drug overdose in 1970.<\/p>\n<p><b>Junkie:<\/b> A heroin addict.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"K\"><\/a><b>Karma: <\/b>Indian term for<br \/>\nfate. You reap what you sow. Our condition in this life is a result of<br \/>\nthe action we made in past lives. We reincarnate until we free ourselves<br \/>\nfrom our Karmic indebtedness.<\/p>\n<p><b>Kent State:<\/b> University where four students<br \/>\nwere shot and killed by National Guardsmen during a protest on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.edu\/ksuMay4\/welcome.htm\">May<br \/>\n4, 1970<\/a>. There is a monument to the students on the Kent State<br \/>\nCampus which is still incomplete. He inspired a whole generation<br \/>\nto get backpacks and take to the road. His beat friends Allen Ginsberg<br \/>\nand Neal Cassady appear in his works. Kerouac coined the term Beat<br \/>\nGeneration to describe his friends and the phenomenon.<\/p>\n<p><b>Key:<\/b> A kilo of marijuana or other drug.<\/p>\n<p><b>Kesey, Ken:<\/b> Famous author, Merry Prankster,<br \/>\nKen wrote: Sometimes a Great Notion and One Flew Over the Cuckoo&#8217;s Nest.<br \/>\nHis famous Acid Tests were the first LSD parties with music and light shows.<br \/>\nHis legendary 1964 psychedelic cross country trip in a brightly painted<br \/>\nbus inspired many hippies to do the same.<\/p>\n<p><b>Kicks:<\/b> Something you do for fun. Something enjoyable.<\/p>\n<p><b>Kif:<\/b> The Moroccan term for marijuana that hasn&#8217;t been processed<br \/>\ninto hashish. Often mixed with tobacco and smoked in a sipsi.<\/p>\n<p><b>Killer:<\/b> Something really great, powerful, or impressive.<br \/>\nThat was sure some killer weed we smoked.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.allposters.com\/link\/redirect.asp?aid=450636&amp;item=96335\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allposters.com\/images\/19\/POM1656_a.JPG\" alt=\"Buy\" width=\"77\" height=\"115\" align=\"LEFT\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><b>King,<br \/>\nMartin Luther:<\/b> Leader of the Civil Rights movement, Dr. King was a<br \/>\nfirm believer in non-violent protest to achieve the goals of integration<br \/>\nand economic, political and social equality for all people.<\/p>\n<p><b>Krassner, Paul:<\/b> Humorist, founding member of the Yippies, and<br \/>\npublisher of the Realist newspaper, he&#8217;s been called the founder of the<br \/>\nunderground press.<\/p>\n<p><b>Kundalini:<\/b> A form of energy that lies dormant at the base of<br \/>\nthe spine that is channeled upward through the chakras via yoga.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"L\"><\/a><b>Laid Back:<\/b> Someone relaxed, easygoing.<br \/>\nA place that&#8217;s cool. I&#8217;ve been to the commune, it&#8217;s real laid back.<\/p>\n<p><b>Later:<\/b> Good bye.<\/p>\n<p><b>Lay:<\/b> Someone who has sex. She was a great lay.<\/p>\n<p><b>Lay it on me: <\/b>Give it to me.<\/p>\n<p><b>Laugh-In:<\/b> A popular sixties comedy show with Dan Rowan and Dick<br \/>\nMartin as the hosts. Stars included Flip Wilson, Goldie Hawn, Judy Carne<br \/>\nand Arte Johnson. Famous for its humor, zaniness, social commentary and<br \/>\nfrenetic pace and editing. It captured the sixties style and attitude<br \/>\nand added it&#8217;s own set of expressions to the times, like sock it to me!.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"lavalamp.gif\" width=\"50\" height=\"120\" align=\"LEFT\" \/><b>Lava Lamp<\/b><br \/>\n&#8211; The original is a glass lamp lit from the bottom with a sort of liquid<br \/>\ninside that rises in colorful amorphous bubbles. These lamps are<br \/>\nnow enjoying a revival and can be purchased via the net. See <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hippy.com\/stuff.htm\">http:\/\/www.hipplanet.com\/hipmarket.htm<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>LBJ <\/b>&#8211; Lyndon Baines Johnson &#8211; He became President of the United<br \/>\nStates upon the death of John F. Kennedy. Was elected in 1964 and<br \/>\nserved another four years. Texas democrat was responsible for the<br \/>\nbuildup of forces in Vietnam and was in office during the bloodiest fighting.<br \/>\nAlong with the next president, republican Richard Nixon were considered<br \/>\nthe epitome of the government run by the military-industrial complex that<br \/>\nprospered during the Vietnam war. Their biggest hit, Stairway to Heaven is one of the biggest<br \/>\nselling tunes ever. Jimmy Page on lead guitar and Robert Plant&#8217;s<br \/>\nvocals make for some heavy blues rock.<\/p>\n<p><b>Lemon Pipers:<\/b> One or more person(s) who<br \/>\nputs a hole thru a lemon (other fruit can also be used) then inserts a<br \/>\njoint at the other end and inhales thereby not only cooling the smoke but<br \/>\ngiving the smoke a scented flavor. (Rolling papers eventually caught up<br \/>\nto this fad and offer a flavored paper commerically). Also the name<br \/>\nof a 60s band who had one hit, Green Tamborine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.allposters.com\/link\/redirect.asp?aid=450636&amp;item=96661\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allposters.com\/images\/19\/GPR3060_a.JPG\" alt=\"Buy\" width=\"79\" height=\"115\" align=\"LEFT\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><b>Lennon,<br \/>\nJohn:<\/b> Beatle, poet, artist, activist, singer, musician. One of<br \/>\nthe great figures of the 60s. Controversial, he once said the Beatles<br \/>\nwere more popular than Jesus (he was right at the time). He sang<br \/>\nabout love and peace and his music inspired millions. He was murdered outside<br \/>\nhis apartment building in 1980.<\/p>\n<p><b>Licks:<\/b> Chops. Groove. A musicians<br \/>\nmusicianship. The music they make.<\/p>\n<p><b>Lid<\/b>: A bag of grass, usually about an ounce (28 grams).<\/p>\n<p><b>Light Shows:<\/b> A visual performance accompanying music at clubs<br \/>\nand concert venues using strobes, film, video, special effects and more<br \/>\nrecently lasers. Andy Warhol put on some famous light shows in NYC.<\/p>\n<p><b>Love beads:<\/b> Love beads were orginally made from small seeds.<br \/>\nThey came in numerous patterns, and were given as gifts between friends<br \/>\nor made by the wearer. They were a common sign of friendship.<\/p>\n<p><b>Love-In: <\/b>Like a Be-In it was a reason<br \/>\nto get together with other hippies and have fun. Loving everyone and everything<br \/>\nwas the general theme of the event.<\/p>\n<dl compact=\"compact\">\n<dt><b>LSD or LSD25:<br \/>\n<\/b>Lysergic Acid Diethylamide.<br \/>\na rye ergot derivative. First synthesized and absorbed byAlbert Hoffman of Sandoz Labs, Switzerland in 1938. Extremely hallucinogenicin minute doses, measured in micrograms. Effects can last up to 24 hours<\/p>\n<p>depending upon dose. Used in psychotherapy in the 50s and 60s.<\/p>\n<p>Researched at Harvard by Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert. Both left<\/p>\n<p>Harvard and Leary continued as high priest of the LSD movement. In the<\/p>\n<p>60s acid became the popular way to trip. An LSD trip is not to be taken<\/p>\n<p>lightly. It is a profound soul shaking experience that expands one&#8217;s<\/p>\n<p>perceptions and broadens one&#8217;s mind. Reactions<br \/>\nto LSD, which include physiological and behavioral changes, anxiety, and<br \/>\nhallucinations, are influenced by the amount of the drug taken and the<br \/>\nuser&#8217;s personality and expectations.<\/dt>\n<\/dl>\n<p><b>Lude:<\/b> A Quaalude, a depressant drug.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"M\"><\/a><b>Maintain:<\/b> To keep one&#8217;s<br \/>\n shit together. Every since my babe left me I&#8217;m finding it hard to<\/p>\n<p>maintain.<\/p>\n<p><b>Make Love Not War!:<\/b> Slogan that sums up<br \/>\n the hippie attitude. Appeared on signs and buttons<\/p>\n<p>during protests against Vietnam War.<\/p>\n<p><b>Mamas and Papas:<\/b> Popular group in the<br \/>\n sixties. John Phillips, Denny, (Mama) Cass Elliot, and Michelle Phillips<br \/>\n sang California Dreaming, Monday, Monday, Creeque Alley.<\/p>\n<p><b>Man:<\/b> A dude. The Man is the police. Man! means damn!<br \/>\n My Man! means a friend.<\/p>\n<p><b>Mantra:<\/b> A form of meditation that uses repeated phrase(s) that<br \/>\n help to free the yogi from random thoughts by focusing on the phrase.<br \/>\n Different mantras have different effects.<\/p>\n<p><b>Maharishi Mahesh Yogi<\/b>: Famous guru to<br \/>\n the Beatles, Beach Boys, and other famous personalities. First everyone<br \/>\n went to visit him in India, then he bought his teachings to the U.S.<br \/>\n Emphasizing the power of meditation, he drew a huge following among the<br \/>\n hippie generation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.allposters.com\/link\/redirect.asp?aid=450636&amp;item=121592\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allposters.com\/images\/22\/21_PA4501_a.JPG\" alt=\"Buy\" width=\"77\" height=\"115\" align=\"LEFT\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><b>Manson,<br \/>\n Charles: <\/b>Convicted along with his followers of the 1969 murders of<br \/>\n Sharon Tate and the La Biancas. Manson had created his own cult out<br \/>\n in the California desert. In his warped mind, he believed that John<br \/>\n Lennon&#8217;s song Helter Skelter was a call to war and mayhem. He used<br \/>\n mind control to get his followers to do whatever he wanted. He is<br \/>\n still serving his life sentence.<\/p>\n<p><b>Marinol:<\/b> Pharmaceutical extract of marijuana,<br \/>\n allowed (by U.S. gov&#8217;t) for those who have prescription for marijuana. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.allposters.com\/link\/redirect.asp?aid=450636&amp;item=96895\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allposters.com\/images\/20\/WAG3397_a.JPG\" alt=\"Buy\" width=\"76\" height=\"115\" align=\"LEFT\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><b>Marley,<br \/>\n Bob:<\/b> Rastaman supreme. The charismatic Bob Marley and his band<br \/>\n the Wailers burst onto the music scene in the early 70&#8217;s bringing Reggae<br \/>\n into the world. His music about love, Jah (god), freedom and equality<br \/>\n touched so many people and inspired many to become rastas.<\/p>\n<p><b>Mary Jane:<\/b> Marijuana<\/p>\n<p><b>Maui Wowie:<\/b> The fabulously sweet, potent<br \/>\n pot grown on the island of Maui in Hawaii.<\/p>\n<p><b>Max, Peter:<\/b> Famous hippie artist famous for album covers, movies,<br \/>\n paintings, advertising. His colorful, flowing style graphics had a great<br \/>\n influence on art in the 60s.<\/p>\n<p><b>Maya:<\/b> The veil of materiality and self-delusion that screens<br \/>\n us all from the true reality of oneness.<\/p>\n<p><b>McGovern, George:<\/b> Democratic candidate for president in the 1972<br \/>\n elections. He lost out to Richard Nixon. McGovern was supported<br \/>\n by liberals and hippies. We can only wonder, what might have been&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0553371304\/hippylandhippiem\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hipmarket.com\/bookstore\/foodofgods.gif\" width=\"92\" height=\"140\" align=\"LEFT\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" \/><\/a><b>McKenna,<br \/>\n Terence:<\/b> Ethnobotanist and author of the book Food of the Gods about<br \/>\n organic psychedelics. Terence is a popular speaker and visionary<br \/>\n who likes to focus on discovering our place in the universe, our reason<br \/>\n for being here, and the future of mankind.<\/p>\n<p><b>Meditation:<\/b> An exercise where one focuses one&#8217;s attention, releving<br \/>\n stress, allowing contemplation.<\/p>\n<p><b>Mellow:<\/b> Something pleasant and enjoyable.<br \/>\n Often used to describe the marijuana high.<\/p>\n<p><b>Mellow Yellow:<\/b> Donovan song that had everyone<br \/>\n thinking you could get high smoking banana<\/p>\n<p>peels. One of the greatest put-ons. <\/p>\n<p><b>Mellow out!:<\/b> Calm down! Equal to chill<br \/>\n out!<\/p>\n<p><b>Mescaline:<\/b> A hallucinogen made from the peyote cactus plant,<br \/>\n still used for native american ritual purposes. These cacti are eaten in<br \/>\n raw form. Processed mescaline compound was ingested as a pill form. Synthetic<br \/>\n mescaline made a brief appearance mixed with chocolate powder and was one<br \/>\n of the best highs ever &#8211; it made you laugh uncontrollably for hours. Anyone<br \/>\n know how to make more?<\/p>\n<p><b>Microdot:<\/b> A type of LSD in a colorful tiny pill.<\/p>\n<p><b>Mikes:<\/b> The number of micrograms as in a dose of LSD.<\/p>\n<p><b>Military-Industrial Complex:<\/b> The leading force in the American<br \/>\n economy in the 60s. The combination of large American industries with huge<br \/>\n defense contracts. Reaps profits from war. Blamed for lobbying Congress<br \/>\n to increase military spending, to step up war in Vietnam. In 1960 President<br \/>\n Eisenhower warned that the Military-Industrial complex was getting too<br \/>\n big and powerful.<\/p>\n<p><b>Mind Game:<\/b> When someone tries to control your mind, often by<br \/>\n trying to bullshit you.<\/p>\n<p><b>Monterey Pop Festival:<\/b> This was the first rock festival<br \/>\n ever. Held in 1967, it showcased a whole new genre of music.<br \/>\n Produced by Paul Simon, Johnny Rivers and John Phillips (of the Mamas and<br \/>\n Papas) it was an event that almost didn&#8217;t happen.
