\nhi! first of all, i just wandered on to your website tonight,and i love it. i
\nam only 16, and i still have alot to learn and this website helps alot. my father says that i am the most liberal minded teenager that he
\nhas and will ever have known. i have a great deal of respect for my dad, but
\ni was kind of afraid to ask him what exactly it is that liberal means. i
\ndidn’t want him to think i was stupid you know? can you help me? <\/p>\n

\nanother question. my older family members and teachers at my school make
\nsarcastic remarks about me being ”such a little hippie((that’s what they
\ncall me)) is it such a bad thing that i have the same morals and beliefs as
\nhippies? they were there once,right? my teachers are always trying to
\nsnoop, like to see if i am into drugs..i have my share ya know..but doesn’t
\neveryone? why are they so curious?anyway, thanx for your time and i hope to
\nhear from you soon.

\nThe current definition of liberal is someone who advocates economic equality
\nand personal freedom. In other words, liberals are the antithesis of
\nconservatives (in theory anyway). Conservatives advocate submission to
\ntheir concept of conformity – usually based on religious convictions. They
\nwant everyone to toe their line. Conservatives also oppose sharing the
\nwealth. They feel they’ve earned it and expect everyone to do likewise,
\nthus they oppose welfare and most democratic institutions that seek to help
\nthose economically disadvantaged. <\/p>\n

\nOf course, your dad is probably referring to the personal freedom part. If
\nothers are calling you a little hippie, it’s probably because you visually
\nremind them of other hippies because of how you dress, wear your hair, speak
\nor act. Rarely are people accused of being hippies because of how they
\nTHINK! But that is at the core of being a hippie. <\/p>\n

\nIf you are very vocal, if you defend those who others attack, if you treat
\npeople equally, if you are concerned about the rights of other people as
\nwell as animals, if you respect the environment, if you’re a vegetarian, if
\nyou advocate the use of marijuana or other mind expanding drugs, if you
\nentertain visions of a better world where peace, love, respect and tolerance
\nare not just empty words, then my friend, you are one of us, regardless of
\nhow you look! <\/p>\n

\nAnd that means more than any label. <\/p>\n
