Every age has its minions who try and protect the status quo. And the 21st<\/sup> Century has a lot of status quo that is begging (and paying!) for these minions to arise and act as propagandists and apologists. The article titled \u201cThe Quack Behind the MSG Scare is Still Stoking Fear for Profit\u201d, by Ian Birnbaum, is misinformed. The actual quack is the author himself, but of course he doesn\u2019t understand that. The article was published on the theoutline.com which disseminates propaganda beneficial to the food, drug and chemical companies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \t\t\t\t\tGreed,\ncorruption and phony science<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Multi-billion\ndollar industries are founded on greed, corruption and phony science.\n It is important to have a high degree of skepticism when reading or\nhearing things that are beneficial to the big pharmaceutical and food\nindustries. For example, the pharmaceutical companies \u2018control\u2019\nMainstream Media through buying advertising. Channel surf in the USA\nnow and every \u2018click\u2019 of the remote, it seems, produces yet\nanother ad for a drug. Little wonder, then, that these networks\naccepting these millions in advertising refuse to air any news or\nprograms critical of those industries. So the viewer is left hearing\nprimarily lies and propaganda. We never hear, for example, any news\nprograms in Mainstream Media on the role of MD prescribed\nantidepressants in rage shootings in the United States. Most, if not\nall, of these horrible school, etc shootings involve people who were\nunder the influence of these meds we know can cause violent behavior:\njust read the package inserts that come *with* the drugs: even the\ndrug companies admit as much. The news reports will never come out\nand say \u2018the shooter was taking antidepressants\u2019; instead, the\nwording is \u201che was under the treatment of a psychiatrist\u201d, or \u201che\nhad been treated for depression\u201d. But I digress. (Stay tuned for\nan article on this very topic). \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n \t\t\t\tMSG\nis multi-billion dollar per year business<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Hilariously,\nIan Birnbaum fails to realize the simplest of facts: it is not a\nretired neurosurgeon who profits from MSG but rather the giant food\ncorporations. Because Ian Birnbaum has gotten things so completely,\nbizarrely backwards one wonders if he munches from a bag of pure\nMSG\u2014causing mini-convulsions and small electrical fires in his\nbrain–while he writes these laughable pieces. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n MSG\nis the abbreviation for Mono Sodium Glutamate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One\nof the most important discoveries in neuroscience is the role of the\namino acid, glutamate in the brain and nervous system. Many know\namino acids are the building blocks of proteins, but it was not that\nlong ago that several of the amino acids were discovered to be\ncrucial neurotransmitters, substances which cause nerve cells to fire\nand communicate with each other and thereby \u2018orchestrate\u2019 parts\nof the body and brain. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n \t\t\t\tGlutamate:\nthe major excitatory neurotransmitter <\/strong>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n Glutamate\nturns out to be the<\/em>\nmajor excitatory neurotransmitter of the brain. The body contains\nboth excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters and, like so much of\nthe body\u2019s marvelous machinery, are in exquisite balance with each\nother. And, importantly, these neurotransmitters are produced and\nused in extremely tiny doses. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n This\narticle throws insults and innuendo directly at one of the more\nbrilliant people teaching about the dangers of MSG and other\nmedical\/pharmaceutical\/food disasters\u2014the retired neurosurgeon, Dr\nRussell Blaylock, MD. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n From\nreading his article and from personal correspondence with the author,\nit is clear his science knowledge was next to none. Which begs the\nquestion: why did he write this piece? Obvious answer: someone paid\nhim. And that \u2018someone\u2019 would most likely be those that do not\nlike the science and medical literature cited by Dr Blaylock when he\ncriticizes the pharmaceutical, medical, vaccine, cancer and food\nindustries. Angering just one of those powerful multi-billion dollar\nindustries is enough to end up at the receiving end of disinformation\nand smear campaigns. Dr. Blaylock has angered all<\/em>\nof those industries. Hence websites such as quackwatch<\/strong>\nand articles like the authors devote themselves to smearing the words\nof those such as Dr Blaylock. The industries such as Big Pharma and\nthe gargantuan food corporations cannot stand anyone who effectively\nreveals them for what they are—money making machines intent on\nprofits regardless of the so-called \u2018side effects\u2019 of the\nproducts they sell. So the big pharmaceutical and food industries\nthrow some sacks of money at the issue, underwriting medical schools,\npaying for phony-data science papers to be published, threatening to\nwithhold advertising dollars from media outlets who air critical\nstories, etc. Enter \u2018useful idiots\u2019–paid hacks who smear and\nundermine with lies, misinformation and innuendo those who challenge\ncorporate behemoths, whose stock price depends on keeping the dangers\nof their products hidden. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n Of\ncourse, the author of the \u201cQuack Behind the MSG Scare\u201d cited not\none scientific paper or reference to back up his moronic claims that\neating loads of MSG is just fine. One of the hottest topics in\nneuroscience is, in fact, excitotoxicity and excitotoxicity often\ninvolves glutamate. Just go to pubmed.gov—the repository of \u2018all\u2019\narticles on life sciences and biomedical topics\u2014and type the word\nexcitotoxicity in the search window and see for yourself: the word\nglutamate is in virtually every one of the thousands of articles on\nexcitotoxicity. After all, the author\u2019s task was to write a smear\npiece so of course he didn\u2019t do one iota of basic research using\ngoogle, much less pubmed. To smear someone now all you have to do is\nmake a bunch of unfounded claims, throw them around, and see what\nsticks. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n \t\t\t\tExcitatory\/Inhibitory\nin exquisite balance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The\nbody uses both excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters to\nmaintain balance. Because glutamate is necessary for nerve\ntransmission there must be systems to counter the excitotoxicity\ncaused by glutamate. Goldfrank\u2019s\nManual of Toxicologic Emergencies\u2019<\/strong>\nsays it this way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cGlutamate\nis the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the CNS (central nervous\nsystem). Although glutamate receptor stimulation is necessary for\nnormal brain activity, excessive glutamate receptor activation can\nproduce convulsions, neuronal damage, and death. Conversely,\nglutamate antagonists demonstrate anticonvulsant activity and\nneuroprotective action in animal models of brain and spinal cord\ninjury. Glutamate may be important in the development of drug abuse\nand subsequent withdrawal symptoms. Glutamate antagonists decrease\ndrug craving and withdrawal symptoms in patients dependent on ethanol\n(alcohol), benzodiazepines (valium, etc), and opioids. The\nexcitatory amino acid receptor system is the most complex of all\nneurotransmitter systems. This complexity is necessary for\nprotection against the devastating effects of uncontrolled excitatory\nneurotransmission. At present, 11 different glutamate receptors are\nrecognized\u201d. <\/em>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n (p\n129 Goldfrank\u2019s \u2018Manual of Toxicologic Emergencies\u2019 2007 ed.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n \t\t\t\tSeizure\nMeds are glutamate blockers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Note\nthat some of the major medicines seizure patients take for their\nseizures work at the glutamate receptor to block the action of\nglutamate. It is worth noting that Dr Blaylock gets many of his\nseizure patients completely off of their seizure meds and those\npatients stop having seizures by doing nothing more than the\nfollowing two things: 1) gets the patient off of all hidden forms of\nglutamate and 2) gets them to take a magnesium supplement. \n(Magnesium blocks the glutamate receptor and protects against\nexcitotoxicity). The hidden forms of glutamate include trick words\non labels such as \u2018hydrolyzed vegetable protein\u2019, \u2018autolyzed\nyeast\u2019, \u2018natural flavors\u2019, \u2018broth\u2019 etc. For a more\ncomplete list see the brochure below \u201cWhat Does Whole Foods have in\nCommon with Safeway and Walmart Groceries?\u201d \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n \t\t\t\tAlcohol\nWithdrawal & glutamate<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n When\nan alcoholic goes into withdrawal, it can be life-threatening. \nDelirium Tremens\u2014DT\u2019s\u2014is a medical emergency and must be\ncarefully managed in the Emergency Department in order to save the\npatient from uncontrolled seizures, coma and death. Those seizure\nare happening because the alcoholic has even more glutamate receptors\nthan an ordinary person and those receptors are firing so fast and\nhard as to cause convulsions, coma and death. And the reason the\nalcoholic is in danger of the DTs is because the chronic alcohol use\nhas unnaturally \u2018calmed\u2019 the cells too\nmuch<\/em> and the cells\nresponded by making more glutamate receptors\u2014many more. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n The\nauthor might try explaining to the M.Ds who are toxicologists and\nemergency room physicians how they are quacks for recognizing\nglutamate\u2019s role in seizures and alcohol withdrawal. Maybe Ian\nBirnbaum can gets some selfies\u2014Click—of himself as he hands his\nquack ideas to the doctors as they are saving someone survive\nuncontrolled seizures due to glutamate imbalance. These pictures\nwould surely involve doctors laughing Quack Birnbaum out of the room,\nlaughing him back into his cave full of other useful idiots working\ndiligently to keep the fortunes of Big Food & Big Pharma intact. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n \t\t\n Why\ndo food companies use so much MSG?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Some\nreaders might wonder: just why the food companies put MSG in so many\nfoods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The\nreason the food companies put MSG in so many products is because it\nmakes you eat more than you otherwise would. Ja-Jing! Up goes the\nstock price of the food corporations.
