Prescott, Arizona

The home of Prescott, University. You will find a large number of artists, mountain bikers, hikers, and outdoorsmen in this town, along with communes galore. Dancing circles of hippies beating drums and enjoying life in the middle of the wilderness are seen on mountain tops near here. People tell me that the university here is one of the most open-minded in the world, and it offers a variety of alternative majors (mountain climbing, kayaking, etc.) and the majority of students are studying from abroad.

  • This is the home of Prescott College, not university. There is a growing number of hippies in his beautiful town but not as many as I would like to see!

  • I lived in Prescott for 15 years. Too many urban cowboys and Californians. Didn’t see alot of hippies downtown, ever, mostly over on Grove Ave where Prescott College is. Jerome is close by, which is ok, but very touristy. If you are in that area and have a chance to see Maryanne & Chris, do so. A very talented duo. Maryanne is one of the best musicians I’ve ever heard!

  • Prescott was a nice place to live until it became a part of california. You Earth-biscuits aren’t helping much. Take a shower, your hair is greasy.

  • the people that i have met from this school have been for the most part, nice and caring individuals, however, there is a subculture, the”sensitive ponytail type” who is always trying to seem sooo smart, sooo liberal, sooo” i feel you pain”, for one reason TO PICK UP GIRLS….amazingly most women, particulary trust fund suburbanite types from atlanta, ga, can not resist the types………these are a splinter group from the black turtleneck, french film watching, “i am a lesbian in a mans body” types….they make me SICK!!!!!!!!

  • i visit your prescott once and you people smoke my pot!

  • I’ve lived here for many years, it’s gotten SO BIG now….actually, it makes me miss Humboldt County, where people are friendlier.
People here are just out for themselves and don’t really care about anything else.

  • Prescott is for the most part lame. There is a big fake young hippie culture here (trustafarians, prescott college kids) that make real deal hippies and just cool laid back people look bad. Pot here is pretty good not that I am in my mid 20’s and can find it. Very boring town for people my age, it has grown way to much. I want somewhere new to move, with nice pot heads my age,, where where where!!

  • Things have changed, apparently. I just spent a semester here in Prescott. Firstly, it’s Prescott College, not university. Secondly, the place is more or less overrun by “hippies”, as you say. I have no idea what you think pot smoking has to do with hippies, other than it’s a stereotypical motif by outsiders of them, but this is the United States and you can get pot anywhere, Prescott or otherwise. That doesn’t make the place more or less “hippie”… Visit the McCormick Art District, Prescott College on Grove, many establishments on Gurley St (Magpie’s Co-op, PNF, etc.) if you are looking for hippies. Food Not Bombs hangs out in the park two days a week with free food; The Catalyst info shop hosts community bike rides every month; ask around PC campus and you’ll get in touch with “dumpster divers”; the ECOSA institute also hosts many events and is on Montezuma. All one has to do is look around to find something interesting or to get involved… Put in a little effort and you might surprise yourself.

  • hey about to live in Prescott, can anyone tell me where i can go to get my hands on some pot. not much of a drinker but love the chronic

  • Well, I’ve been told that “hippies” and the “counter-culture” are not really that welcomed in Prescott — a good reason for me to want to move there. I am looking for a friendly place where people can have fun without getting high — being in that state-of-unreality does not make you a productive or pleasant person to be around .

  • Prescott college is about a million dollars to attend…. so any kids going there sporting ragged clothes and eating the free food from Food not Bombs are just pretending to be poor…. you have to be rich to attend Prescott College. It’s hard to talk to a lot of the kids too. Despite their reputation for being “down-to-earth,” Prescott College kids are generally unfriendly.

  • Thank you for sharing your exicepenre on this blog and for your response above. It was helpful to my husband. I could only hope that he would remain undetected as you are. He also had to quit the medication early due to similar side effects you went through. We will try to keep positive in the meantime and hope for the best per your advice. 🙂
