St. Louis, Missouri

“There is a substantial hippie community that exists on St. Louis’ South Side around the area of South Grand Avenue. There is also another older, but growing hippie enclave in a close-in suburb of St. Louis. Known as the University City Loop along 10 blocks of Delmar Boulevard, the area is hopping with hippie-run shops and vendor stands.”

Another Opinion: Bullshit.I lived there for 10 yrs on and off and ya I meet some cool people (every place has em) but The Dirty BASTARDS tryed to give me 30 yrs for cultivation. 14 little plants, less than 5 grams. I’m a 3 time loser, but I hadn’t been locked up in 17 yrs. I just thought since You people were trying to guide people to where the Kynd Folks are St.Louis and or Missouri ain’t it. The Law there are about the Money and Crooked, definitly stay out of Jefferson County south of St.Louis

  • That is so true,i know, because i have lived in jefferson county my entire life. being a free spirit is very difficult here. it is the worst county in missouri. we constantly have meth labs blowing up. this is a hick place! why does all of this happen here!? and the cops are horrible. they will bust you for ANYTHING. it sucks, i cant wait until i’m 18.

  • st louis is ok but there is only one hippy shop and its run by this death metal dude who always blasts heavy metal in the store, i live off south grand, and thats ok, but its not that great, a record store, coffee shop, book store, pretty decent , but im movin first chance i get

  • as someone who lives only hours away from st. louis i must say it sucks here.
did you know the gov. gives the police here 1,000$ for every marijane seizure they make? guess how much they reward them for taknig down a potentually explosive meth lab?? not a damn thing….
does that show you how our wonderful state really is?
dont move to this state to run from them laws….
one roach as big as my pinkey nail and they wanted to pull my dr.’s liscense and possible county jail time. had to hire a lawyer and ended up getting 20 hours community service, big fine, and that was over 7 years ago.
imagine how the laws are, worse now!!!!!!!!!! think long and hard about living anywhere in the united states if you are a peace loving hippy.. you aren’t safe anywhere here.

  • SCHWAGSTOCK! a local grateful dead tribute band puts on mini woodstock type fests about 6 times a year, once a month in the spring/summer/fall months and 1 on halloween (spookstock). attended by 4000 to 6000! these are incredible, and theres so much GREEN there, its out in the woods, (private land), and the people are great. vendors, 2 full days of music, bonfires, drum circles, cant be beat! go to https://www.theschwag.com for more info

  • Hippies need to go somewhere else and fester and stink up the place. It will only be a matter of time before the MO cops get rid of the The Schwag and their hippie haven in the ozarks

  • Sure alot of the people suck but i love this place. For my friends and my community, the people i having been hanging out with my whole life and even the new ones i have. Damn st.louis is cool. cops suck everywhere. I live right between the loop and south city (grand) so i hang out in both places alot and there is alot more hippy stores than people think you jsut gotta knwo where to look their are two head shops in walking distance of my house and i dont live on delmar or grand. Everyoen knows everyone in st.louis how can you nto love drifting from place to place with the peopel you love smoking pot and listenign to music and schawgstock only a couple hour drive away.

    Peace St.Louis

  • As far as I know,
The “Loop” in University City, MO. has had an original, open and eclectic scene for as long as I’ve known it (26 years). If that translates into what is considered “hippy,” than that’s what the place is. I feel I’m more than lucky to live near it!

  • For the last post about shwagstock. Thats a damn good time, they have a band called the SHWAG, and they cover all grateful dead, not the real thing, but they sound really good, the lead singer does a very good Jerry. Did I use to many commas in this review, I don’t think so, oh well fuck it. Peace out, live happy!

  • Hey guys, I grew up in Saint Louis & although I’m not a hippy, I now live in extreme Northern California. I can personally testify that St. Louis in general (although the tides of change have arrived) contains one of the most dreadful & downtrodden attitude or vibe known to man. I’m not trying to add to the negativity, just that St. Louis is best viewed from a window speeding fast and far away from Jesus-land.

Please- take it from one who knows: it’s not worth the heartache & harrassment from the cops to even co-exist there. It’s really horrible.

  • i agree with the 2nd post i read. growing and smoking in U city and south stl isnt a very wise idea these days. but buying in U city is a good idea. they have some good buds. i could prolly grow mounds of pot if i wanted too. i live in a little suburban area in st charles county, where ive smoked for 7 years and never been caught with anything besides alcohol.

  • I currently reside in Jefferson County just south of STL. IT FUCKING SUCKS. THis is coming from a single hippy mom that lives in a state where some asshole can knock you up and never have to take responsiblity but the second I decide to smoke a joint after a hard day they want to take my precious child from me. FUCK THAT! My dad just got back from Iraq and before and now he was a Jeffco Deputy. He agrees with me that this is one of the shittiest places in North America. I live in the Meth capital of the WORLD, yes the world. Stats that came out three months ago have it down to Jefferson county as the most labs per milage(meaning for every one mile we have three or four meth labs) I am an all natural hippy and I really don’t care what others do with thier bodies in that respect, but I refuse to live scared in an apartment that some asshole above me may blow the whole building up with me in it. One more thing is all the fucking petafiles. Every other man has either molested or raped some child of his family. God what is the world coming to. I am getting the hell out of MO and to the west coast where my son and I have a fighting chance of leading a better life. So in conclusion, any hippies looking to make MO thier home, think hard, then think harder, and keep thinking until you don’t want to even drive through. And the band shwag fucking sucks when it comes to fair dealings with independant businesses(drug dealers) pot, meth, cocaine, shrooms, and acid are all fine, but heaven forbid you bring a tank of nitrous. Love’n and warn’n you.

  • I grew up in Jeff. County, or as we called it, Metherson County, and I hated it- I’ve never met so many facist fucking pigs in my life. I’m so glad to be the hell out of there, and I’m with ya, I would never have let my son grow up in a place like that. I live over in Alton in Illinois now and I’m lovin’ the differences, that and the benefits of what nearly seems to be a copless town with the exception of the main roads. Good luck gettin’ out of dodge.

  • I lived in St. Louis for a few years and really loved it there. It’s beautiful and there is a lot to do. Jefferson County is pretty far removed, though. Living in the City or close-in is best. A population of almost 3 million means there’s room for everybody. You just have to find your spot. Lots of great people. U-City Loop and Grand-South Grand are cool places, and not the only ones, either. Central West End is really nice, especially during warmer weather, and there are lots of eclectic neighborhoods. City life is definitely coming back. For sure a place to check-out.

  • Punk/Hippie friendly places to check out in StL:
    Bolozone, south city house
    Slaughterhaus, south city house
    Lemp Arts Center, south city
    Delmar Loop, watch for cops
South Grand – great food, check out the Lemongrass or Pho Grand
Ramp Riders, skate park south city
Central West End – traditionally an old hippie part of town, really ritzed up in the past couple decades though (nothin’s cheap in the CWE)
Forest Park … parks in St. Louis are generally great, and some of them afford really nice spots to smoke .. just keep your eyes open

Overall, StL is an alright place to be – just watch out for whitey, and there’s lots of pigs

  • schwag will be coming up in the next few weeks so keep your eats open. i’ll call schwag (the band) sometime soon and ask when they are doing it. they are mutual friends of mine. as far as jefferson county goes, stay away. cops there are dicks. The loops is ok but gets really boring. your best bet is to get some friends, a few beers and smoke at a private place. altho smokin in the st. louis – st. charles parks are deffinately fun if you have the balls to smoke in public.

  • St.louis hyas some of the worst energy and all the shit here is poop for where i live i live in south county but have been to the loop and jeffco many times and it all sucks but you just got to find who youre friends are and stick with them or you could just say fuck it and become a meth addict but all and all i just get high and deal with it

  • St. Louis is full of good nuggets and good fun

  • Does anyone know when the next schwagstock will be?

  • jeffco’s fine to get blazed….i’m usually one toke over the line anyway

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half-full of cocaine and a whole galaxy of multicolored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…. Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls…. But the only thing that worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible than a man in the depths of an ether binge….”

great movie….ok here’s my stl story:

so i’m driving…this kid goes “ur going to jail…” and i go “oh fuck…” mick me sean and seans friend got pulled over stoned the other day. sooooo scary. he pulled me n mick outta the car and questioned us for like 20 minutes and let us go. not even a ticket. i almost pissed all over. we pull away, seans friend goes “we got pulled over? When?”. i was talkin to the cop and huggin the car so that i didnt fall over.

    The end,.

  • Im 14 years old and ive smoked for like 2 years now.. and Ive lived in jefferson county for all my life and it does suck. Im stuck here with my mom and the both of us feel stuck with no way out. Growing up here is tough. Its worse than you would imagine. Kids now days are so mean to one another. I have made a few good friends. But the rest of everybody ive gave a chance has turned out to be mean and cruel for no reason. But for some reason when ive travled out of state people have been really nice and cool… something is just wrong with missouri. I just wish there was a way out!

  • sothat shit happened to my friend mitch, and all details are to his discretion.

i wrote this out out of depression.

mitch: in case ou care i’m in still in the hospital for a suicide attempt with valium

  • Why all these comments about Jefferson County? Hello, the topic of discussion here is St. Louis. Yes, the Loop and South Grand are nice. I appreciate a lot of the diversity here though. The Hill, Benton Park, Lafayette Square, Soulard, all the city neighborhoods have their good points. There are a lot of good people here in StL. You have to find your tribe though. The cost of living is not outrageous like so many “$$$HIP$$$” places. People are down-to-earth. I like the fact that this is not some kind of Mecca for the beautiful people. If it were I’d move elsewhere. There are also a lot of incredible parks and natural beauty in the entire state of Missouri.

  • I gotta clean my outflow for a j.o.b. Got any suggestions that are a SURE THING? If so PLEASE post info for me. Anywhere in the St. Louis area that I can purchase this lifesaving potion will be helpfull. Peaceful Journeys!

  • Hey i am all about having a good time just relaxing and smoking the green with my friends but you really dont want to live hear in MO i live in a small twn and it blows the cops will ride your ass and pull you over for no reason i got serched once for seting in a parking lot lol they didnt find shit and the funney thing was i had some in my front pocket stupid pigs but if you think about it would a differnt twn really be any better are they all the same?

  • ok, so here’s the deal. any town is gonna have cops that don’t like you tokin’ up. that’s just how it is. avoid them and don’t be a dumbass, and you’ll be alright.
For those who say there aren’t head shops, you must be special. Off the top of my head there’s at least 6 of them
St. Louis isn’t a hippie haven, but there ARE several hippie hangouts!!!
    1. The U-City Loop: 2 head shops, sunday night drum circle, good food and live music
    2. Venice Cafe: hippie hangout extrordinaire… band called Jake’s Leg does Grateful Dead songs there, and it’s just awesome anyway. I was kicked out once for smoking pot, but they did so EXTREMELY understandingly and politely, just saying they “don’t have a license for that”
    3. All throughout downtown, the Loop, South City, the Central West End, there is live music and a good atmosphere

p.s. I don’t even know why anyone mentioned Jefferson County… it’s south of St. Louis and everyone knows it sucks ass. No one is debating that or ever would. But why bring it into a conversation about hippies in StL?

  • i need 4 doses… help a girl out

  • I am a hippy that lives in st louis and i love it. its not a bad place to grow up really. Jeff Co does suck, but everyone from missouri knows that. Its known for meth.. which i hate. If you wanna have a good time in the STL i suggest getting some buddies, getting silly, smokin some dope and drivin down to the old rock house offf seventh st to see the schwag. As far as other places go.. my favorites definately the loop. theyres always something interesting and plenty of head shops. If your looking for a cool place to be outside and smoke though, Castlewwood State Park, Lone Elk Park and Greensfelder Park are some of my favorites. Greensfelders a horse community though so u’d wanna go riding, with a nice fat blunt rolled up for the ride. I dont see what this guys problem is honestly. I always find fun no matter where i’m at. Sound like someone needs some good nugs so he can chill out.. then maybe he could find some good friends who’d actually want him to stay in stl. Again though, its not location. its who you are. if your a fun person like me, you can find fun anywhere!

  • Does anyone remember the “REAL” hippies of St. Louis? The So. Co. hippies of 1968 and 69? Perkins Pancake house? So. Co.mall and 7 Kitchens? Listening to local bands at the Forest Park Pavilion? A guy we called “Home growin”?

  • We’re For The Irony, A Jam Band from Sturgeon, MO and we’re looking for new hippie friends to come check out our show at Cicero’s in U City on Jan. 15th! Our concerts are always party friendly and we’re looking to recreate the parking lot atmosphere before the shows and after too lol 😉

If you wanna see some awesome jam music and have a good party too come check us out at Cicero’s on Delmar Blvd. January 15th. You won’t be dissapointed!

We cover bands like: Gov’t Mule, Derek Trucks, Pink Floyd, Jefferson Airplane, Led Zeppelin Plus we play trippy originals too 🙂

  • I am looking for a commune around the St. Louis area. Anyone know of one?

  • OMG! Sounds like a really crappy place. Do the schools suck too? I was checking this forum out cuz we might move there from Boulder, Co and we have two small children. I grew up on the west coast, so this could be too much of a culture shock for me.

  • For the person that said he didn’t really want to live in a place that is a “mecca for the beautiful people” I say that is the right attitude.

To add to that thought, Alan Watts said in his audio series session titled “the spectrum of love,” that in order for the hippy, or extreme liberal to even exist, there must be the opposite extreme.”

Would Gandhi have ever become who he did had it not been for the presence of the British Colonial powers? I don’t think he would of realized his true potential as a Mahatma, or “great one,” redefining and claiming the integrity of his people.

My point is, resist, rebel, and rise above the shit. A lotus blossoms from the swampy muck. Peace and beauty is always possible.

  • Hi hippies. Two hippies on the road stuck in st. Louis need gas money to get to hampton for phish by tomorrow , got goodies if u wanna help us we have room for gas riders

  • Hey just looking for some down to earth, hippy livin friends to hang with in the Lou. I am 27 y/o single mom and I am really tried of money driven, closed minded, negative peeps! So if ya have some good vibes and want to meet a new friend I am totally down!!! Email me at nenejolee1220@yahoo.com

  • i’ve lived in this area my whole life, (granite city) on the illinois side. saint louis is great to go hang out in, because one gets bored with the burbs. i like saint louis. i went to chicago recently, and it was very difficult to find a place with laidback people. beer was 4.50 for a budweiser bottle, and the bar itself tried to play off like it was chill(grateful dead stickers, and a hookah in the corner) but really the bartender was a snooty floozy, and there was a 30 year old man dressed in a suit buying drinks and mackin’ on what looked like a 16 yr old girl with braces.

anyways, back to saint louis. there are some parts you don’t want to visit, like north saint louis and east saint louis. just don’t.

the delmar loop in University City is pretty fun. there are three head shops there. Sunshine daydream, the Smoke Emporium, and TNT. I reccommend TNT because they’ll haggle prices sometimes, and the glass is locally blown. The Pageant is also on Delmar, they have some happening acts. Nothing too mainstream though. The tivoli is there. It is an independent film theater. In the summer and fall they have midnight showings of old flicks on the big screen-like Pulp Fiction, Dr. Strangelove, and Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Fitz’s (where they brew the soda) is a good place to eat.
So is cicero’s pizza, and they also have live acts there, mostly local, but a few outta towners, but always good, and the ticket to get in is cheap. beer is pricey, but they have 54 different beers on draft, so cut ’em a break.
South Grand, by Saint Louis University, is a culteral epicenter. I do recommend lemongrass, a vietnamese restaurant, or Sameems, an afghani restaurant. The city Diner is also on South Grand. It’s open 24 hours, and has a sweet ’50’s decor. The Hill, an italian neighborhood nearby has VERY good dining. Cunnettos is award-winning and not much more expensive than the pasta house.

And around this area you can find Gravois Avenue, which has some reasonably priced headshops including Area 51 and Eclipse.

Everyone who visits Saint Louis needs to check out the City Museum. Moreso than going to the Arch. It’s an old building that has been converted into a multi-level playground, all made from recycled things. Very visually appealing. It’s in downtown Saint Louis on Washington. It’s about 12 bucks to get in, and it’s opwn ’til 1 am on Fridays and Saturdays. It’s a fun way to have an alcohol free evening.

    As far as bars go:
The Venice Cafe (Lemp Ave) and The Atomic Cowboy(on Manchester) in South Saint Louis both have a chill crowd. Soulard is an “irish neighborhood” and one can find many friendly pubs there. Schlafly Taproom(located on Locust in downtown) is also cool and when you go you support local business, as Schlafly is a microbrewery in Saint Louis. They have their fantastic beer on draft there, and host a multitude of local acts. You can goto their Bottleworks about 20 minutes outside of town (in Maplewood) and tour the brewery. The Bottleworks has a farm outside, where they grow much of the produce they cook with and all the meat they serve is from missouri.
Anheiser Busch brewery is in Saint Louis as well, and you can tour that and get two complimentary beers. The tour is free too.

If you’re an allnighter, but not necessarily a partier, check out coffee cartel, located on maryland plaza in the central west end. it’s open 24 hours.

The Landing has too much of a Yuppy nightlife vibe, but there is an awesome wax museum that you can check out during the daytime, and it’s free.

The contemporary art museum, The Saint Louis Art museum, Lamier Sculpture park, and The Sheldon Art galleries are all fantastic free places that one can view art.

Cool music venues to possibly check for upcoming shows: The Creepy Crawl, The Old Rockhouse, The Firebird, and The Pageant. if you are into the electronic scene, check out Dante’s or stlraver.com for upcoming events.

all in all, saint louis is a good town. it’s what you make of it, and where you choose to explore that makes it worthwhile.

  • Does the Saint Louis area suck or is it a cool, kind place? Actually it’s both. I read the posts on this board with great amusement. Even wasted as I am now, I can write decent sentences and convey words carefully and to maintain a low profile.

The Saint Louis region has a lot of cool people in it and some communities are cooler about smoke than others, so how local police handle possession depends on where you live, as does your social-economic status. Those of us in Webster Groves, Kirkwood or Crestwood (mainly white, upper-middle class, even if we’re old hippies) are usually treated much better than fellow whites from Lemay (in the county), south Saint Louis, north Saint Louis city or county or even parts of Affton. I think it’s partly a class thing and how one handles the situation when the police do a search or a bust.

More polite, less trouble. No record, less trouble.

  • I am moving to the South Side in a week or so. I have lived down there in the past, but never really met any really great people that were my type of friends. Tho I don’t go to the bars, or out to eat or stuff like that, I am pretty much out of options. I need to find a job when I get moved down there, so hopefully I can find a cool place to work, or at least someone cool to work next to. I have found it pretty hard to find cool people around St Louis that smoke, or who are willing to hang out, and pass time. Maybe it’s just me, tho. Maybe there is some sort of underground loop that I have not heard of yet. However, I do know that there has to be some awesome open-minded people that just like to hang with some friends and get lit and do stuff… lol! It seems that there is an overpopulation of perverts in St. Louis as well…. Guys tell me all the time “I get really horny when I smoke.” I do not understand why they feel the need to tell me this, but never-the-less they do. It’s hard to tell someone you need to buy a soda, without them turning it into something perverted.
And what do you do if you are… say at forest park, and you smell people smoking, and you just want to say hi? DO you walk up and offer to smoke your own shit with them? Or do you just walk by and admire the smell of theirs? Where I come from, everyone knows each other, and they all know who is cool and who to steer clear of. And I know that there are some risks and people you should stay away from in the city, but I hope this time around, to find some awesome people to kick it with and get to know.

  • where can i buy a hippie skirt?

  • I just moved in to st louis, and I’m looking for any hippies that are willing to let me stay with them intil i get on my own two feet

  • I’ve lived in STL my whole life and in St. Charles county for 18 years. I never had problems with cops, but the STL area is lame all around. There may be lots of places here & there that are half decent bars, etc. but the city has nothing to offer that isn’t way old (been there, done that).
If you don’t have a LOT of money, don’t plan on finding a decent place to live unless you don’t mind bangers and dealers (learn to duck the drive-by’s).
I’m ready to go southeast any day and I will in the next few years.

  • hey i have been in misouri since april and moved here from nevada.currently where i am which is near springfield i have found no hippies so i am considering st. louis..any advice anyone have, or job/living hook ups?pleas email me buff_elliott@hotmail.com
